In my experience, referrals are the best source of high-caliber candidates for the openings I fill (not an earth-shattering observation, I know). I've also found that candidates that come from referrals are also much less prone to hyperbole and outright deceitfulness about their accomplishments and work history. Is your experience similar? That you can have more confidence in the veracity of information referred candidates share?
