Two years ago I was living in Argentina. I spent the first half of 2007 saving up my pennies so I could be a snowboarding bum for the Southern Hemisphere winter, at a ski resort in the Andes called Las Lenas. Highest elevation was 3900m above sea level, and that was a six-ish hour hike outside of the resort boundary.

I remember the first backcountry hike I did was a two hour hike. We climbed and climbed, in the thin air for what it seemed like forever. It almost got to a point for me when I thought my chest was going to explode.

Standing at the first chute after catching my breath was gut wrenching. Terrifying. My knees were trembling and my heart was in my throat. There's no way I can get down that!! No way at all! It was so steep I couldn't see where it went! All I could hear was my friend yelling "KEEP TO YOUR LEFT!" just below my line of sight.

Then something amazing happened. I went for it! I straight lined down the narrow, steep chute into an magestic bowl that seemed as big as a soccer stadium. Full of snow, up to my waist. It was like riding a white cloud.

What does this have to do with my future in recruiting, I hear you say. Well, exactly this.

There are times in this business when I feel overwhelmed, when I feel like I can't make a difference. Engulfed by mountains of resumes, and not enough minutes on the clock to get through the sales calls I need to in a day. There are those "black arm band" days where three contractors quit in a day and that 25k perm placement got fired two days within the guarantee period.

But then there are those perfect days. Those days when a candidate receives the job offer of their dreams. Those days when three fall offs become three long term deals. Days when you change someones life for the better.

It's those perfect days that make it for me.

I will create my future in recruiting to be as challenging, ambitious, awe inspiring and rewarding as I do with my snowboarding.

That day at Las Lenas changed my life forever. And I want to help create the same life changing experience for the candidates I work with.

That is my future in recruiting. And it starts tomorrow!
