OT - In Rememberance of America's War Dead - Quirino Chavez - My Uncle - Killed in Action - Venafro, Italy - November 9, 1943

A salute to all of America's War Dead. They paid the ultimate price for their country.


My uncle - Quirino Chavez, 180th Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, killed in action November 9th, 1943, in a battle to take Venafro, Italy. He was buried December 9, 1948, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It took five years to bring his remains back stateside for burial. Remember.

From autumn 1943 to spring of 1944 Venafro, Italy was the scene (along with Pozzilli, Filignano, San Pietro Infine) of bitter fighting between the Germans, entrenched in the mountains to the north and the British – French – U.S. along the Gustav Line, during the Battle of Monte Cassino.

Five of my uncles fought in World War II - Four returned.   My father survived WWII but was 100% disabled and died of complications related to the war.

A proud salute to America’s war dead. They paid the ultimate price for their country. As a Vietnam Era veteran I also salute those of us who served along side those who never returned home. Our remembrance of them and their sacrifice is our special keepsake.

99 years ago today my uncle, Quirino Chavez, was born in Monticello, New Mexico. 

I regret never meeting my Uncle Quirino because, of my five uncles who fought in WWII, he was the only casualty...dying in a fierce battle in Venafro, Italy -- six year before I was born. 

I salute my uncles, aunts, father, mother, brothers, cousins, nephews and nieces for their work in the military -- particularly in time of war, past & present.  And for my Uncle Quirino and Father Philip who paid the ultimate price --may they rest in peace.  And my prayers still go for my eldest brother, Philip Jr., and younger brother, Glen who live with their combat related disabilities.
