Just wanted to get some opinions on this topic, which method has worked best for you when in search of a candidate for a new position? It seems to me candidates who apply directly rather than you contacting them first seem to be more reliable and serious.
Thoughts?

There are active candidates and passive candidates. You normally get CVs from active candidates when you use job postings. Sourcing from different channels such as Linkedin and using search strings in Goole usually give you passive candidates. I'd say that both work equally well and do not have to exclusive of each other. Both ways should compliment each other.
