Agency/Third Party vs. Corporate Recruiting

Posted on September 21, 2008 at 10:36pm 6 Comments

I'd love to get everyone's take on which side they think is better. In my job search I've been considering both but really kind of wary of going back to an agency. Maybe I'm the only one with a bad experience ?....

Agency has it's obvious advantages on the comp side but what I like about the corporate world is that you have direct contact with the Hiring Manager and have access to get your questions answered on the role. I've also found that I get more 'respect' as a corp recruiter vs.… Continue

hi alex-
here are a few ideas to work with
connecting with the right people and networking can give you and in to a company that may interest you. attend association meetings. be on and ready for people to see you-- be on your best game at these events.
be sure your resume reflects significant accomplishments relative to that industry and the role you are best suited for. quantify your accomplishments with metrics on the resume. i dont recommend walking into an office without an appointment. happy hunting!

I am the “Admin” for the Recruiters On LinkedIn group, www.recruitingblogs.com/group/linkedin. You have recently joined and this is a "welcome" to the group and "here is how it works".

Over the past year I have been experimenting how best to facilitate members being able to connect with each other. Some want to connect with everyone and some are looking for a few meaningful connections.

1-2 times per week I send a group introduction message with 10-15 new members and reintroducing others.

What this means for you is simple, do you wish to be introduced to the group?

You have 4 options from which to choose:

(A) “Open Networker” with name, email address, and LinkedIn URL as you want to connect with anyone and everyone.

(B) “General Introduction” with name and LinkedIn URL as you are specific about who you want to connect with.

(C) “Lurker” no announcement will be made as you want to be on the sidelines connecting with people as you wish.

(D) “Super Open Networker” which is (A) plus having your contact information on the group page.

A caution on the “Open Networker”, you may be inundated with invitations to connect. For some this is exactly what they are hoping for and others this could be a pain.

I do ask, if you receive invitations from members you do not want to connect with that you “Archive” the message versus “I don’t know” so the sender is not penalized by LinkedIn although how you handle this is up to you.

Again your options are (A), (B), (C), (D).

Please include your LinkedIn URL and email address you prefer to receive invitations and send to paul@mnheadhunter.com

Thank you for your time.

Alex, Alex,. (a) I'm not doing a show this Wednesday. (b) I cancelled all of my shows in August so I'm just working through the people I bumped then. Let me get back to you for a date in October.

And... what do you want to talk about? It can be a regular interview about your experience and ideas about recruiting.

But make sure that you listen to some of those clips because you'll be interviewed in front of other people by me and a rowdy panel of whoever calls in. So you've got to enjoy taking a few hits.
