Derek Wirgau commented on Amos's blog post 'Why Counter Offers Are Good (except for headhunters)'
Hmmm...on the surface I want to believe that getting on offer to use as leverage is not right. However..... It appears that Nicky would have taken the new position if no counter happened. Also, how is this different than when we shop for cars? We…

Derek Wirgau replied to Francois Guay's discussion 'What makes a Recruiter Great!!!'
Perseverance - The ability to keep your momentum going. Making the calls, following up with candidates, learning the orders, etc. Prioritization - Knowing what are your hot orders and working on those for over 50% of your time. I am fortunate…

Derek Wirgau commented on Samantha Lacey's blog post 'Do candidates expect too much?'
I am not sure it can be blamed on the generation. I have had candidates across all ages that are totally unreallistic in their expectations. I had a mid 40 yr old candidate turn down a $114k role with a company offering benefits valued at 48% of the…

I am afraid that you were played. From my experience in negotiations when a small item that makes no sense derails a deal, there is something else going on. The declining party is just looking for a tangible item to hang their decision.

I don't see how government testing and regulation will help. All brokers of financial products are licensed and it'sstill a dog eat dog industry with the investors as the main meal. Within the recruitment industry, I have found that the…

Absolutely right on. Who likes to go shopping when their are no prices on things. And if you ask, you are told 50 - 70 range. Really!?!? When the salary is cleared up front along with relocation needs, the close of the deal goes sooooo easily and…

I learned early on the HARD way that laying it our for the candidates is what is needed to close the deal. After 4 months in the biz I was fortunate to find 4 candidates that would eventually receive job offers. However, 3 fell apart because: -…

One of our firms favorite is a "Purple Squirrel". This is that job order the client gives that has requirements that seldom exist together if at all. This is not for the badly written job order, just that odd job that a company has. We had…

Derek Wirgau commented on Judi Wunderlich's blog post 'How NOT to Get a Job'
It all sounds great, except I'm not so sure about #2 regarding the cover letter especially when I have lots of resumes to go through. 95% of the time I have found cover letters to be used by candidates who aren't great fits for a role and…

Derek Wirgau commented on Joshua Letourneau's blog post 'Recruiting Tool for Knockout Candidate Presentations (ComF5)'
This is an interesting concept. From friends that are being contacted and asked to do the video presentation - they are very very resistant. They feel that this will do most of them a disservice - in that the client will first evaluate them on…

Derek Wirgau commented on Alasdair Murray's blog post 'The same thing that's dragged job boards down will kill off social recruiting (or why recruiters fail to grasp the concept of advertising)'
You are so correct!! There is way too much cut and paste. I would like to add one other item that is driving away the qualified candidates - Shell Postings!! First, as a former candidate, these shells are a disservice to the industry. Yes, it is…

"Why should we not hire you?"

Posted on March 8, 2010 at 10:18am 8 Comments

This is a recent question I am seeing asked of my candidates. I see multiple ways of answering this and this appears to be a new twist on "What are your weaknesses?". What are your thoughts on the best response to this?

Thanks,

Derek
