Harry Urschel commented on Hassan Rizwan's blog post 'Serve or Receive, But be aggressive.'
You're right Hassan, it is easy to get complacent or passive when it seems like the market is at a standstill. Pursuing things more aggressively does set you apart to both your clients and candidates. So... I better get back to work! Good…

Minimize the 'Hops'!!!

I received an email from someone trying to figure out how to minimize any negative impressions his resume may make to potential employers because he had worked a number of contract and consulting projects. When he lists his entire job history, it looks like he’s been hopping jobs way too often when in fact it’s the nature of the project work he’s done. Some of his assignments were a matter of days and others for several months, but it makes a chronological resume look bad. This is not an…See More

What's Your Purpose?

Ever spend much time thinking about that? What’s your purpose? What does that have to do with your career? Harry, good list of characteristics and well defined. I certainly agree it encompasses all occupations. It would be interesting to see what would be regarded as key expectations for recruiters, as the focus seems to be on candidates. In my view…

Very nice article. I think "professional" is in the eye of the beholder, Will alludes to this above. I sometimes find that I will meet someone who is described as "very professional" in a casual atmosphere and the doors get blown…

Harry I do like your points. In fact I just received a comment yesterday from a client that described my candidate as being "very professional." This particular candidate is very articulate, listens well and is someone who seeks to make…

I think we also need to look at our different biases - what does someone who's 23 and just out of college think is professional? What does a CEO who is 40 think is professional? It varies. And Deidra's comments about trustworthy behaviors…

I agree with your perspective of professionalism Harry. Although, I believe it is scratching the professionalism surface. Professionalism begins with trust and credibility. If a person is not trustworthy they will not be appropriate, competent, or…

Are You "Professional"???

What makes someone “Professional”?I’ve read interesting takes on that question lately. Some good points, and some… not so much. What defines professionalism? Based on various pieces I’ve read, it’s certainly subjective. Whatever the definition anyone uses, it’s often THE factor that tips the scale from one candidate to another in the hiring process. In trying to define it, the dictionary doesn’t seem to be much help. Webster defines professionalism as: “the conduct, aims, or qualities that…See More

Hi Harry, very pertinent post. To your point, if recruiters are not looking at cover letters, would it not be a GREAT IDEA to save candidates the work and effort to construct a great cover letter, only for it to ignored. I am not disagreeing with…

Cover or Uncovered???

Posted on November 4, 2009 at 11:17am 3 Comments

I’m often asked how important a cover letter is when submitting a resume for a position, or if one is even necessary at all. My answer is: “It depends.”

Who is receiving your resume? If it’s being sent to a recruiter, or you are applying to an online system, you can be virtually guaranteed that a cover letter would not be even looked at, much less read. The volume of resumes that go through a normal recruiting process makes it all but… Continue
