Quickly, analyze why. Are you trapped in a market? Are you commoditized? How can you differentiate yourself from your competitors?

When I founded JohnMarch I had never worked in a retained search firm so I was blind and leading myself. Did I make mistakes? Gosh yes. Too many to count. But the driver for me was that I had dealt with other retained firms and was always frustrat...

I would add an overarching theme: poor execution. You can have a plan, a good market, plenty of capital -- even a killer web site and still fail.

That is so true. I never before made the comparison but ALL of those elements are there. PaperGIRL to entrepreneur!

I am a firm believer that the entrepreneurial "bend" starts early. How many ofyou who consider yourselves "entrpreneurs" started, or "ran" businesses as a child?

Baby Boomers, Gen Xers Collide At The Retirement Door

DALLAS, Texas (March 31, 2009) -- As unemployment numbers continue their worrisome climb, and as the stock market moves erratically up and down with so many retirement plans hanging in the balance, I have been thinking lately about the much anticipated shift in the workforce -- as Baby Boomers retire they will be replaced by eager Gen-Xers. For years workforce gurus and insurance actuarial analysts have been proclaiming the arrival of this moment in time. Now that the time has finally arr… Continue

Russian Roulette In Executive Search

This is a blog post that I wrote for my healthcare Board Chairs and Hospital CEOs in September. Before I discovered this wonder group. As we prepare to jump to 2009, I thought I would share it with you, my colleagues, in hopes of generating some comment on how we can move recruitment to the next level of performance in 2009.

The definition of a good leader is a work of art.

The definition of a bad leader is a tragedy.

A major hospital is ready to make an offer to a prized senior leade… Continue

To Journal Or Not To Journal

DALLAS, Texas (Dec. 28, 2008) -- Journaling is a trendy sort of thing. I know people who have been doing it, religiously, for years. Others started but did not stay with it. It is like a routine of physical exercise, I guess. I know others who have started after taking a journaling class. Interesting. I did not know there was a class for something like this – teaching you to write thoughts and ideas in a book.

My interest in journaling did not come from a lofty notion that I had something impor… Continue

It Is Not Too Late To Say Thank You

WESTPORT, Connecticut (December 24, 2008) What Got You Here Won’t Get You There is Marshall Goldsmith’s amazing book on how successful people become more successful. It is a great read for executives who have been fired or for those who are successful in many ways but cannot move to the next level of performance.

I am in Westport for Christmas. It is near freezin… Continue

Small Firms Can Compete Overseas

JohnMarch Partners, a boutique healthcare search consultancy based in downtown Dallas, was awarded multiple search assignments by a UAE firm working under contract with the UAE government. We beat out several of the major firms for this assignment. Not only is the work very profitable, there is a good possibility that our academic practice will pick up related assignments.

How did we get the engagement? Believe it or not, it was not that hard. And the account acquisition costs were minimal. The… Continue
