Lol. The opening sounds familiar. Very Shakespearean. You must have had a great relationship with your boss because that could have gotten anyone else one less reference. Loved it!

Why would you want this person working for you in the first place?

(I initially posted this at jonathanmcleodrecruiting.blogspot.com, but thought some people at RecruitingBlogs might enjoy it too.)Cleaning up my inbox, I found my letter of resignation from my previous job. Some might wonder, what the hell was I thinking?Keep in mind that I liked the job, was good friends with my boss (and still am), and was on very good terms with the company... oh, and I wrote it in about a…See More

Howdy Tom, I too did that I/O thing and know that the best predictor of what one will do tomorrow is what they do today (somewhat oversimplified but I know you understand). However, this doesn't preclude a savvy interview team from throwing in…

The problem with interviewing tricks is that they introduce lots of randomness unrelated to job performance. The proven effective road to nailing top talent remains focusing in on behavior descriptions of specific achievements/challenges closely…

I've never been a fan of interviewing 'tricks' like that. I think you run the risk of losing the respect and interest of a star candidate who could be turned off when you ask her/him to sell you the pencil. That's been the…

The interview's the thing...

A woman has been sitting in our lobby for 71 minutes. Patiently waiting. Sitting and chatting. More precisely, a candidate for our administrative/bookkeeper position has been sitting patiently for more than an hour. Part of this is her own doing - she was 20 minutes early; part of it is happenstance - our branch manager had another meeting this morning that is running muuuuuch longer than expected. She's not concerned; she's willing to wait. This is a huge point in her favour. She has been…See More

Seminar thoughts

So I completed some job search/resume writing/interviewing seminars last week. Things went pretty well. I had about six people out to each one, but at least they all seemed interested.I may have some more thoughts later on, but one of the main revelations I had was that I talk too much.Cheers.See More

Did it go well? I really don't know.

The other day, I noted that I had job search seminars coming up. Well, the first one (job searching techniques) is over, and I can say quite definitely, I have no idea how well it went. The positives1. I had enough material.I know this shouldn't be a worry; there is a lot of information to cover in this area (and, certainly, I did not cover it all). Nonetheless, having not taken as much time as I would have liked preparing, I was a little concerned.2. There were actually people there.I didn't do…See More

Hobbies

I'm tired of hobbies - don't get me wrong, they're great, and I have a few (though not as many now that I have a toddler). I appreciate that they help to maintain our sanity, and they make us more complete as people. Being fully developed is nice. Here's the thing: I, most likely, don't care about your hobbies. If you have submitted a resume for consideration for a highly specialized, technologically involved, demanding position, I have little interest in your favourite book, your stamp…See More

The procrastination of the job search ...seminar

No, I'm not looking for a new job. I like where I am, and I'm reasonably secure, so I'm sticking around. However, about a month ago, I looked into offering a job searching seminar at one of the local library branches. It seemed like a good idea (which came from the owner), so I contacted the library. Well, within days I had set up a meeting at the library, selected an appropriate room (well, auditorium), booked dates (as my little seminar turned into three three-hour long seminars in the same…See More
