Stop Drifting and Start Driving Your Career

The ultimate purpose is to not just focus on the finish line but also understand the best method to get there and not hope or expect, but drive to achieve our career goals in the desired time.If you are reading this you must have an interest in business, management, leadership and your own role in an organization. Bicultural Executives Have an Edge

The term globalization has been thrown around for decades but it has never applied as much as it has in recent years as organizations become more focused and specialized within a specific industry or product, and reach beyond their traditional regions of business. Globalization has evolved from being a commercial exchange to a multifaceted integration of many aspects of the business. This trend has created a need for strong leaders who can manage a complex environment with a high level of…See More

If you are not turning into an expert you’re in trouble. The generalist is dead.

For many years I wondered what the real difference was between being good and being great. How do you clearly define it? What is it that puts a person or an organization at a different level than the rest? And I did read Jim Collins’ book which addresses the subject but I got my simple answer in a Homer Simpson DUH! moment watching TV. (How else do you achieve a Homer Simpson DUH! moment?) Ironically it was a General Motors commercial that quoted: “Amateurs work until they get it right.…See More

Is change management about to change?

A few years ago I had a conversation about change with Mike Osterling. My lean manufacturing mentor and consultant. The topic revolved around change management and how it became easier as an organization embraced constant change as part of its culture. My theory was that at some point there would be no need for change management if change became part of the culture and the operating environment. At that point our discussion was focused on organizations that struggled with change and struggled…See More

ExecHunter commented on Jose J. Ruiz's blog post 'No rocket science in salary negotiations'
"PS. Charles - I'd advise not trying to get more time off as a main negotiation point - you haven't even started working yet and you want to not work! I know this isn't your real rational, but it may be percieved as being so. If you do…"

"Jose, This is a great article. I think that you really "get it" to an extent that many don't. That said - I have a theory - when you tell people a range, or any numbers at all - they only hear the top numbers and nothing else. If…"

Charles Van Heerden commented on Jose J. Ruiz's blog post 'No rocket science in salary negotiations'
"Jose, thanks for demystifying some of the issues around pay, particularly for negotiating offers. Candidates would be well advised to have a good understanding of the total package. In my last role I had ten items on my negotiating list - including…"

Ron Rafelli commented on Jose J. Ruiz's blog post 'No rocket science in salary negotiations'
"Great article, Jose. From someone who has been in corporate HR for 15 years, this is all good info. The saddest part is that with most companies it doesn't matter how good you are (you could be the best widget assembler in the history of the…"

"Bravo, Jose!!! Very well written article! Too many times I hear exactly the opposite of what you are proposing. I am so, so glad that someone else agrees with this philosophy. In our community (Metro Detroit) the economy has been…"

No rocket science in salary negotiations

How much? There is no easy answer for this question but the best way to address is it is to understand a company’s typical thought process. Regardless of what companies will openly admit there are three things that will determine what a company will offer you when changing jobs:What you are worth in the MarketThis has nothing to do with your perceived value, it is important to distinguish your perceived value from your market value. Your market value is simply based on what others with a…See More
