On my team we do have a minimum of 5 NEW candidates presented (per recruiter) each week. The 1st Recruiter to reach his/her goal is allowed to leave early on Friday. If nobody reaches it...nobody leaves early. Healthy competition and encourages the…

I think I would be more concerned with my employment and my relataionship with my boss if I were going through any of these things and it wasn't noticed. How much of a relationship do you have with your boss if they don't notice some life…

You are absolutely right...the problem I have been facing here is that the pool of Supply Chain candidates is very small. I have heard it called the beauty shop of Oil and Gas. It is so small in fact that if something happens with a contractor at…

Lisa I'll offer my 2-cents. I don't think that there really is a "new style" of Recruiting...at least not a successful one. There are new tools that are many times being mis-used, but real old school recruiting hasn't…

I will NEVER understand the mentality of an "email" recruiter. How in the world could you possibly think you have gotten to know a candidate well enough to put your name/brand on his resume by only exchanging a couple emails. That's…

Kent Sims commented on Matt Alder's blog post 'Why Social Recruiting needs to fail'
I think 1 of the top "failures" that recruiters will run into when trying to utilize SM as their primary tool for recruiting is that it can not ONLY be used for recruiting. In my opinion...a recruiter must use social media tools for…

Why a company chooses CONTRACT resource vs. PERMANENT employee?

Posted on December 10, 2008 at 1:59pm 2 Comments

I guess this is more of a question that I hope to get responses to...rather than a blog post.
I'm looking to compile various reasons a hiring manager or company would prefer to hire a contractor vs. a permanent employee.

Reasons OTHER than budgets and money. I understand the financial benefits...but lets talk about the OTHER reasons out there that managers hire contract resources for long-term positions.

Social Forums - Recruiting (How To)

Posted on October 20, 2008 at 10:00am 1 Comment

Last week I went through a rash of bashing related to Recruiters' over-use of the Social Networks like LinkedIn, Ning, Facebook, etc... This week I'm going in a different direction. I am going to recommend and discuss some effective alternatives to big board recruiting that you may or may not have been utilizing yet, but that I find to be very helpful.

The topic for today is...FORUMS!!! (social forums)

Let me preface this by saying I am absolutely not (in NO way)… Continue

LinkedIn, Twitter, Social Networking - RECRUITING is SPAM

Posted on October 17, 2008 at 3:30pm 12 Comments

There is a situation brewing in the world of Social Networks and Recruiting today that I believe is becoming a real problem. I've been in the Recruiting Business about 8 years. I know...I know...I'm not the "seasoned veteran" like some of you 20+ years veterans, but I think I've cut my teeth pretty well and have a good feeling for what is happening in the industry.

I've heard all the rage about LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Ning, etc... and I've heard people for YEARS telling… Continue

You are absolutely right...the problem I have been facing here is that the pool of Supply Chain candidates is very small. I have heard it called the beauty shop of Oil and Gas. It is so small in fact that if something happens with a contractor at one of my client’s sites, the next day I will have about 5 phone calls from contractors working with other clients asking me what happened. Can we say gossip? lol
Anyway...I don' think I said this right on the posting...but after the internal database (and yes…always, always the first place I look) has been exhausted, referral sources have been exhausted, and LinkedIn/boards….where to next?? I want to learn…how on earth did they do this before boards? Before databases and online resources? How do I call into a company and find the right person? The true “old school” way. I want to make more calls and find people that aren’t on the boards. Most people in this industry follow their co-workers and managers and get jobs though word of mouth and connections. I would love to find out how to reach these people …the ones who are not on the boards, not on LinkedIn and are never actively on the market.
