How to capture your deliverables

Consultants often work without clear or complete briefs. Sometimes this is natural, as the client may have called you in to do a task they are not familiar with. In many instances, the client will not have the time to detail everything or go over your recommendations and suggestions for a task they do not have the expertise for. This can lead to ambiguity in the way your work is assessed at the end of the assignment and can impact contract renewals.Every single deliverable you have is directly…See More

How to become a Cutting-Edge Consultant in your area

Consulting as a career usually has ups and downs, referred to by some as ‘feasts and famines’. These are par for the course and should be taken in your stride, but it is important to treat down-times as critical skill and knowledge recharge times where you take the opportunity to come up to speed with latest trends and developments in your area. A large part of this may be accomplished while you are on the task itself, but there will always be areas outside the realm of your projects that you…See More

How to manage life as a consultant – stress

www.consultgenie.comLet’s admit it, a consultant’s life is not exactly stress-free. Yes, there are no routine office pressures, no back biting to manage, no office politics to deal with and no boss to breath down your neck. That makes life much better for a consultant than for regular employees. But, there is always the uncertainty of work, low work periods, delays in payments and sometimes too much work coming your way. All these can cause grief, stress and in extreme cases, breakdown. How to create a presentation about yourself

Posted on September 18, 2009 at 8:58am 0 Comments

Let’s face it, there is too much to read in today’s workplace. Black lettering on white background has led to a sort of fatigue which results in painfully short attention spans. How do you get your profile to stand out in this environment? The answer is to use the audio-visual medium. The truth is that not many of us have been able to figure this medium out; talking about ourselves in anything other than a resume becomes a tad difficult. Here’s a ready-reckoner:

What is the compensation you can expect as a consultant?

Posted on September 18, 2009 at 6:58am 0 Comments

New consultants often are faced with the uncertainty of the amount of compensation that they can expect as a consultant: not getting a standard paycheck at the end of the month does represent a significant shift in approach to work. The key advantage of being a consultant over an employee, from a compensation standpoint is that you can work for more than one client at a time, while as an employee it is not feasible (and probably illegal) to expect to deliver to more than one employer. The fact… Continue

I appreciate the feedback. Consultants for the most part are pretty well aware of the obstacles that must be avoided in the profession. I find that people, especially those moving from perm jobs to becoming consultants due to the economy, are unprepared and frankly unaware of the landscape. Therefore they enter unprepared and more likely to be unsuccessful. Thanks for the article...keep writing.
