A.K.A. Wood Shop

My son, who is in middle school, was telling me about his day the other night.  He said, “so we’re in class, Technology and Innovation a.k.a. Wood Shop.”  I asked him what he meant by a.k.a. Wood Shop.  He said that’s what it is.  They basically take blocks of wood and use tools to make things.  Technology and Innovation Class.Wood Shop has value, but calling it Technology and Innovation Class is sending the wrong message.  We’ve got a real skills gap in this country.  It’s closing, but you…See More

Lost Productivity

Lost productivity due to eclipse watching was reportedly over 700 million dollars.  That’s a day off or two for a bunch of people.  Not everyone, but that’s a lot of productivity out the door.  With the recent hurricanes we have a bunch of days off for fewer people, but still a lot of lost productivity. These numbers are minor compared with the lost productivity that we see every day from poor effort, lack of effort, and wasted time.  Employees who are dedicated and work hard are worth a lot…See More

Coming Home

The state of Maine is making a concerted effort to bring candidates back home.  Companies in the state are targeting candidates that grew up there, went to college there, or have a significant history there. It’s a good strategy for stability.  People who have experienced life in a certain part of the country and want to come back are more likely to stay for the long haul.  Creating opportunities for candidates like this makes sense for businesses that will benefit from stable employment and…See More

Entrepreneurial Lull

Americans starting new businesses is at a 40 year low.  The biggest factor is the maturity of the nation and economy.  Everything seems covered.  It used to be that you could look around and see what the area needs and start a business with little or no competition.  Now they don’t need another dry cleaner in town, or another Thai restaurant. There are, of course, lots of opportunities in new technologies and holes to fill there, but even those are getting filled up pretty quickly.  New…See More

No Relo

The number of Americans relocating peaked in……….ready for this………1985.  Last year only 10% of people in the US moved. The problem with this is that people are not getting to where the jobs are.  It’s not just that companies don’t want to pay for relo.  That is certainly true and is a factor, but candidates don’t want to move.  The average time spent in a given job has been getting shorter and candidates know this.  So uprooting the family and moving away from the place that you’ve made home is…See More

"I looked at indeed trends and "relocation assistance" is a term that is on the rise with job seeker searches. The question is with such a tight employment market should Relocation be on the table for every hard to fill role?"

The One That Got Away...

Posted on September 21, 2017 at 10:37am 0 Comments

….is a myth.  It’s not the one that got away.  It’s the one that wasn’t a fit, even if you thought it was a fit.  Recruiting is about the one that you are searching for and trying to attract.  When the one in your sites gets away, it’s not the one you are searching for any more.

Don’t waste time on the one that got away.  You need to be focused on the one you are searching for.

Moving On

Posted on September 20, 2017 at 1:28pm 0 Comments

Netflix built a culture over the years based on the idea that they are not a family, but more of a team.  Like a professional sports team.  The basics are, we are focused solely on results.

You can take time off when you want or work when you want, but you have to produce.  If you produce, great.  If you don’t, we don’t need you.  You could be great at what you do, but if it doesn’t produce what the team needs then we have to move on.  So you’re not really fired.  It’s more like…

Too Many Jobs, Too Little Pay

Posted on September 18, 2017 at 2:50pm 0 Comments

The JOLTS Data is out and shows that job openings have reached a new high.  Not just a blip up, but a new high with a new average high for the trailing 12 months.  In other words, the trend is up.  6.17 million job listings in the US.  That’s a big number.

We also have a record low labor participation rate currently.  Some believe that this indicates that the job openings in general don’t pay enough to lure workers back to work.  If businesses in general are going to have to increase…

Not Just On The Resume

Posted on September 17, 2017 at 3:56pm 0 Comments

Making mistakes on your resume is a sure way to get you overlooked.  Presenting yourself in a less than favorable light will do that as well, but not just on the resume.

Jobvite’s 2016 survey of 1,600 recruiters and HR professional found that 72% of respondents had a negative reaction to typos. Other social media sins include sharing photos of marijuana use (which 71% of respondents couldn’t stand), oversharing in general (60% of respondents weren’t fans), and posting pics of alcohol…

“Todd is truly a breath of fresh air in this industry. He takes a very open and honest approach when it comes to his business and in the recruiting industry there is not much more you can ask for. I can always trust what Todd tells me and I know that he always has his clients, the candidates and the recruiters best interests in mind during all stages of the process. Todd’s ability to handle the needs of both his client and the candidate in a manner that results in a great experience for all is one of the many factors that set him apart. I am excited to grow our working relationship and look forward to future opportunities with Todd and his company. Todd’s professionalism, dedication to the job at hand and trustworthiness easily allow me to strongly recommend him to any client or business partner. Regardless of the role or opportunity presented to work with him I am certain Todd will make an excellent partner and will leave you with only the best of impressions.” December 14, 2009

“I have worked with Todd for over 3 years and am amazed at his reach nationally to find the best candidates. I have hired him to help one of my clients to find engineers, something in short supply in Southern California. He always comes up with the best candidates, even better than the local recruiters I have worked with. Todd is punctual and very responsive when contacted and stays in touch all the time throughout the process. He is a beacon of light in an industry full of recruiters who are lazy. I highly recommend Todd if you need a recruiter who is very effective and has a great network. He really works for his fees. Dan Curtin” November 10, 2008

We have found that Todd is very professional, and that he has a very strong knowledge of the way recruitng should be done. Todd knows his clients and understand what they are looking for in a candidate. He is very quick to respond to any questions and provides concise and clear feedback. When a candidate is in the interview phase Todd follows through so that all parties can be kept up to date and clear on the status. We have worked with Todd on several difficult to fill positions and have both enjoyed, and learned from the experience. We look forward to working with him on many more. November 7, 2008 Sally K. "Todd is one hard to come by and rare to find. Over the years I’ve known him through our daily recruiting operations, he has never failed me, not even ONCE. He is 200% dedicated and expert at what he does. His follows his miraculous system with precision, insight, determination and perfection. He is one I’ve known with the most business common sense, openness and fairness. You can expect a lot from him but still not getting disappointed. He is truly one of a million, the best partner I’ve had. He sets the perfect example of what a model business partner should be. I can never say enough of how proud I am in finding him. I have no doubt that our partnership will be a lifelong one. I highly recommend Todd to anyone interested in partnering with him for any business activity." May 10, 2009

I don't always have a candidate for your open job orders but always conduct a

search in my files and "only" send if appropriate.  Would appreciate remaining on

your open job listing distribution.  Frank Gregg,. GREGG & Associates

Hi, my name is Kevin and I am the operations manager for a healthcare recruiting firm in Los Angeles, CA. I’m reaching out to you because you indicated on your profile that you were in healthcare staffing and possibly open to doing some splits. We have a lot of open job orders and offer a 50/50 fee split. Would you be open to discussing ways we could collaborate from time to time?
