I used to work with children each summer when I was in college. My best achievement was probably the lessons I taught them about trust. Sometimes, team building exercises contain elements that build trust, but it's not always so explicit. Perhaps...

Are there any success stories of recruiters finding a new job for themselves through RBC? If there are, it would be nice to include them in the article.

Suggestions on how to generate new business? I hired a guy to work on the financial sector last month. He spent three weeks cold calling HR departments and executives in his existing network and now has a choice of 15-20 positions to work on. I'm ...

Imagine that, Damien found someone who is hiring... I keep reminding my employees and recruiting firm owner clients that MILLIONS of white collar people will get hired this year and you ONLY need a few dozen of them to have a pretty successful off...

Oh yeah, I'm a big fan of name checks. There are so many bad recruiters out there that you can't merely trust that a recruiter sent in your candidate's resume to a client. If they are a good candidate, it's worth checking. Good luck making a place...

Great work Damian. Some truths are universal - and one of them is "You never know until you make the presentation"...... I hope your sendout goes well. Good luck!

I agree with you completely, Diana. It got me thinking about the way people look at the current job market here in Tokyo, where everyone has such a negative view. Like you, I'm swamped at the moment!

It's surprising to see so few Japan based recruiters here, but I'm happy to say I'm one of them. My company has clients in several industries, so there's a good chance we already know someone in the domain you're looking for. Finding a bilgual Ja...

How do you introduce yourself to people you meet in business?
Since early 2005, I have been introducing job candidates to firms in Japan. Most of my clients are foreign capitalised companies, ranging from start-up ventures to Fortune 500 corporations.

The challenge is greater than simply building up a network of contacts and a reputation as an expert; I have to develop and share an understanding of how international businesses can adapt to the Japanese domestic market. It can become quite painful if you don't have an appreciation of the Japanese way of doing things, so feel free to contact me if you need some local know-how.

Panic hiring? No - panic searching!

People do strange things when they panic. Things they wouldn’t otherwise do in their everyday lives. It’s easy to understand how some people can become desperate in the current climate, but I’ve seen some really strange behaviour that I’ve never seen before. At least, I’ve never before seen it on such a large scale.

It’s not unheard of for companies to say to recruiters that they would be interested in a candidate with a particular profile even though no hiring budget exists. If they meet someo… Continue

Understanding Bilingual Clients

One of the recruiters in my company started working with a new client about a week ago. He quickly found a candidate who matched their requirements for one of several positions and submitted the resume. The client’s response was that they changed their mind and didn’t want to take on new agencies as they already worked with enough. So, what went wrong?

I had previously spoken to the recruiting coordinator on the phone and she didn’t sound so confident using English. Most foreign capitalised com… Continue

The Recruiter Who Shot Himself In The Foot

Sometimes, I just can't believe how lucky I am. At lunchtime today, I called a salesman to see if he would be interested in looking at some job information. The words "yes please" swelled so much before they could leave his mouth that he almost choked.

I asked if he was interviewing with anyone at the moment and he said that he'd been led to believe that there simply aren't any jobs in Tokyo for his industry. It turns out that he gave permission to another recruiter last week to send his resume… Continue

Want to work for Panasonic? Buy Panasonic.

Panasonic have come up with a novel alternative to pay-cuts. Rather than demoralise employees by paying them less, they have asked 10,000 managers to spend ¥100,000 on their own products by July.

This measure could save thousands of jobs in the retail sector. It may even help relieve some of Rakuten’s recent ¥54.98 billion losses.

Will this save any of the 15,000… Continue
