Lots of people are talking about employer branding these days. While I agree that all companies should be conscious of how they are viewed by employees and prospective employees, I think many branding efforts are misdirected and a plain waste of money and effort.
It’s not about how many people think you’re great. It’s who, and why.
Brains over beans
I work with young tech companies who, by their very nature, are selective in who they employ. Most really are…

BE THANKFUL
If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof
Overhead and a place to sleep ... you are richer than 75% of this world.
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a
dish someplace ... you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.
If you woke up this morning with more health than illness ... you are
more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.
If you have never experienced the danger of…

In just a few days we will be joining family and friends to sit around a table and appreciate the many blessings we have. But, what are your REALLY doing to share with others who don’t have as much as you? What legacy are you teaching your children about what Thanksgiving really means? What are you teaching strangers about the gift of giving and random kindness? What are you teaching yourself about not putting yourself first?
Growing up, each and every year we volunteered to…

What am I thankful for? Lot’s of things including a satisfying job, great colleagues and the opportunity to surround myself with the kind of people in this community…..but my 12 year old grandson wrote about the most important things in my life. The heart of everything that inspires me to success in business.
He is writing his bio for a school project. It’s a school-year long effort and he just got to the part about his mom, my daughter’s heritage. I loved it and I’m so thankful that…

On this blog, we try to offer a thought-provoking take on all subjects related to job seekers and their experience on the job market. As I've mentioned, we believe that empowered job seekers will have a significant impact on the overall turnaround of the market itself. So when we decided to write about Diversity and Inclusion (D&I), we wanted to offer an outlook that you might not find…

In the spirit of the season, I thought it would be worthwhile to give some thanks (sometimes you forget about it in the midst of everything else). So, in no particular order, here are a few things that I’m particularly thankful for this year:
* You: Seriously. I appreciate the time you spend reading this blog. I hope you find it worthwhile.
* Monster: It’s very useful for our industry to have a ‘big’ company to kick around. Plus it keeps the target off everyone else.
*…

I left a long comment on an ERE thread realated to
Monster's new search offering.
My organization has been intimately involved with resume search since the first hour of business. It's a complex subject involving multiple audiences and multiple uses for search results. There are multiple material unanswered questions involved:
- is there anything specific to resume search…

There is much discussion on Social Media Groups and by people posting blogs about Branding.
When you think about it…what is Employer Branding? Isn’t it employers doing the right thing by running a company that people respect and where employees want to work? Often I think if an employer has a catchy slogan they believe it is enough to attract attention, get people interested in their product and their brand is…

I was out for a hike in nearby state park with my son's Cub Scout den on a beautiful North Carolina day today and had an interesting conversation with a friend whose son is also in the den. I love those conversations with smart people in other businesses where you can share and gain perspective outside of your normal business routine. This friend has a renewable energy business. It's a neat business model, he's got VC capital (something most of us in our business couldn't fathom), and he's in…

Just posted a story about the six biggest applcaint lies we see from an empyment screening point of view. Wondering how it jives with what recruiters see. See:

Although statistics vary widely, there is widespread agreement that a substantial number of resumes belong in the “fiction” section of the bookstore.…

Let's face it, we've never before lived in an age where such a plethora of job opportunities are accessible to us at the mere touch of a button. But is this instantaneous solution really all it's cracked up to be? Is the constant search for new and supposedly better ways to reach the job seeker really an advance, or merely adding to the woes of the already stressed out candidate who, when faced with a huge list of all too often bland and uninspiring job posts, struggles to separate the wheat…

One of the questions I get often asked as a blogger, is what to right about. So in preparation for the blogging track I led at the

So if you blog about recruitment, in any way and constantly get stuck for subjects to blog on, take a…

Brands are fascinating. Search Google and you get 525 million hits. Search your home and you’ll find virtually every surface either branded or displaying something branded. Shut your eyes and think for a moment and chances are good even your internal landscape is cluttered with brands. And if you’re among the top 15% of consumers, you (and the other 14.xxx%) account for approximately 1.5 billion brand…

It funny how people get so anxious and nervous about interviewing. Sure the people you meet with during an interview aren’t people you know and it won’t be easy to judge the meaning of their words and inflections much less their body language, but is it really that different from what you do everyday?
In your current position you’re constantly making sure your boss, peers and clients/customers are pleased with your work, attitude and effort. So aren’t you really interviewing everyday…

Do you lead one? Do you have one? It's a pretty good question these days since there's a lot of talk about Tribes going around. And it seems to be an evolving situation but an interesting one since it's apparent that it's becoming a very powerful cultural phenomenon. I would say that it's probably because of the increased connectivity we all have allows us access to people who have the same views and values. For more on Tribes, I would recommend Seth Godin's book, oddly enough titled:…

Reflections on the unconference TruLondon
Today was an auspicious event: Trulondon an unconference planned by Bill Boorman and his merry band of geniuses. I have admired Bill from afar because he embodies something sorely missing from the industry of recruiting: a heart of gold.
It has been an honor to participate in Bill’s blogradio show over the past few weeks. I am the girl who toots the horn of compassion. We simply can’t take the “human” out of human resources, yet so…

Having the technical competencies necessary to perform a job function seems to be a pretty universally accepted requirement in order to be considered a viable candidate. However, it is perhaps equally important what the personality and attitude are in the package-deal that is a new hire. With more and more companies adopting behavioral or corporate culture-based interviews it seems the trend is to hire based on soft skills as well. The only question is, what makes a person a good fit for a…
