A half-baked job board turkey from Facebook

Facebook launched its long-rumored job board offering last week. It was a bit rocky:

  • “ It’s buggy and kind of janky looking.” – FB userMike Chapman (and thank you, Mike, for…

Here’s Why the Indeed.com Deal Sucks for Monster

In all the hoopla last week surrounding the Indeed.com acquisition, most pundits overlooked how bad it was for Monster and its job board brethren.

According to a source who wanted to remain anonymous, Recruit Co., Indeed’s buyer, had a deal with Monster on the table as well. Indeed’s pricetag was rumored to be $1.2 billion while Monster wanted $1.4 billion.

So, a measly $200…

Monster Rumors Heating Up

Someone might be close to acquiring Monster - finally.

The who’s-going-to-buy-Monster rumors have come and gone over the years - LinkedIn being one of the most recent - but the buzz this time ‘round may be more than a ploy to pop the stock.

Sources have been pointing to Fall as the time it’s all supposed to go down. Only time will tell, but here are a few of the players in the mix, ranging from logical to not-a-chance-in-hell:

  • Microsoft -…

Monster.com gets into bed with Facebook but where’s the action?

Monster Worldwide, the parent company of Monster.com, one of the world’s largest job boards today announced a much deeper integration of BeKnown, their social platform that sits on Facebook. From today, job seekers can begin to leverage the power of the Facebook social graph whilst using Monster.com (or any of its 34 regional variants in 19 languages) through the first stage of what is planned to be a much deeper integration of the BeKnown Facebook App on the site.

So, what’s in it…

Fish Where the Fish Are – News Papers to Job Boards to LinkedIn

In 1975, Charles Revson, Co-Founder of Revlon Cosmetics, was quoted as saying, “Oh Lord, give me a bastard with talent.”  I can understand the irreverent prayer because job hunting was a bigger risk.  The primary method of communicating jobs was the newspaper with limited geographic circulation.  Since that time, and with the dissemination of technology and understanding of hiring risk, new tools have increased the opportunity to find the right candidate faster and greater…

Rumblings in the hiring ecosystem: what we can learn from the Source of Hire data

Gerry Crispin and Mark Mehler have been conducting the landmark CareerXRoads Source of Hire survey for over a decade. In my mind, that’s useful data. They’ve just come out with the 2012 edition, and it’s absolutely worth a look. The top four sources of hire include referrals (28%), job…

What's the buzz? News from the online recruiting world

What exactly is happening in the job board and online recruiting world? Well, to paraphrase Neil Young, ‘job boards never sleep’ (okay, yes, that was awful!), so here’s a quick roundup of some industry tidbits:

Mobile apps for job boards: a scorecard for job seekers

Note to recruiters: I wrote this for job seekers, but I think you'll find it interesting.

If you’re part of the 97% of the US population with a cell phone, you most likely use it for more than phoning. And if you’re part of the burgeoning subset with an iPhone, Android, or other smartphone, I can guarantee that you use it for all sorts of serious (and silly) stuff.

Looking for work (or keeping your fingers on your neck of the employment market) is possible on a smart…

The year in job boards: 2010 – what we learned

In 2009, the job board industry (and the rest of the world) was deep in the recession’s trough. It was ugly.

With 2010 essentially in the rear view mirror, I think I can safely say that we’re out of the trough. We’re not at the top. We may not even be that far from the bottom – but a lot of things are looking better

What Recruiting Channels should I use?

We receive a lot of questions from employers asking us essentially the same thing, “what recruiting channels should I use?” The answer to this question is always “It Depends.” It depends on the job position, it depends on your company’s employer brand, it depends on the resources you have on your recruiting team, it depends on how much recruiting budget you have, etc. We listen to their situation and then provide recommendations.…

Dave Jacks' 7-Step Guide to Finding a Job

Dave Jacks’ 7-step guide to finding a job

Most of you know me and know I’m a recruiter and that I try to get out and attend networking events as much as possible. Often people ask what do you do and as soon as I say “I’m a recruiter,” they explain

that they or someone close to them needs a job. They probe a bit and I

explain the areas we focus in and encourage them to send me their

resume regardless of whether their in an area we focus in and…
