In the past 20 years, many companies have outsourced myriad functions to vendors, partners, and professional services companies. Some of the most popular functional areas for this have included accounting and payroll functions, helpdesk, marketing, low-level software development, among many others. When these moves were made, they were often justified by the fact that these were not the main areas of focus of the company, the chosen partner(s) demonstrated a clear focus,… Continue

There is a general consensus amongst search firms (and even some internal recruitment teams) that a face to face interview removes the need for a formal English testing assessment. Recently, we challenged a senior director from a large recruitment business to challenge their views on whether a face to face interview will always be better than an English test at testing the English competence of a candidate. Having originally dismissed the need for an English testing service on the basis… Continue

“Screw your cubicle farm!” The free agent nation is here.
In 2001, Dan Pink published a bestselling and forward-thinking business book titled Free Agent Nation: The Future of Working for Yourself. By all current reports, that future has arrived.
If the millennial generation will become predominantly free agents, how will this impact recruiting and HR over the next decade?
“Contingent labor is king," writes Russ Banham in the May issue of HRO… Continue

With the rise of social media, the increased importance on employer branding and increasingly sophisticated sourcing tools and techniques, successful recruiting today requires increased complexity. As employers embrace these best practices, they've also increasingly embraced recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) as… Continue

I recently joined a Global RPO solution onsite at an investment bank. Making the leap from agency, especially as an established consultant where I managed to build an innovative sourcing desk servicing an entire business; into a new position and environment was a huge risk for me.
I went with my gut and chose carefully, selecting an RPO that had a…

A coworker of mine absolutely detests the phrase, "Recruiting is a lot like dating." She says it's cliche and trite; and she is right. The problem, though, with cliches and all things trite, is that they are true.
Why is bears repeating that Recruiting is a lot like Dating:
- There is the obvious "courting" that occurs in both dating and recruiting, with recruiters often serving the role of "Match Maker" between candidates and companies
- Dating and…

Recently I read a great book called In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the whaleship Essex. It tells the true life story of a whaling ship from Nantucket in the 1820’s which was sunk by a rogue sperm whale. Herman Melville based his famed novel Moby Dick on this tragedy. The twenty despairing men of the Essex were… Continue

A good friend of mine recently started out in recruitment. She's worked in sales before and is excellent at closing deals, so I knew she'd have a good chance at making a success of a career in recruitment. It seems though, that she's struggling. Not because of her ability, she's managing to get vacancies and submit candidates, but because of the work of her predecessor. The person who ran the desk before her, who is now a director within the company, seems to have annoyed and alienated some… Continue

I work in a busy RPO office, we make dozens of employment offers on behalf of our clients every single day and 9 times out of 10 these offers are accepted. Candidates are grateful for the offer and excited to start a new job and hiring managers get a brand new person on board.
I have noticed though, that there seems to be a small percentage of candidates who wait until the very last moment to demand a very unreasonable change to their offer. In my previous firm someone's… Continue
