As I was watching the final play of the Saints/Vikings NFC Championship game last week (and, coincidentally, procrastinating on writing this article), I thought about all of the preparation and moments that must have led to the Saints being in position to win the game on one final play.
If you are an IT Job Seeker, hopefully you realize that you are in a competition and, let me tell you, there is no competition as fierce as getting a job through a VMS. For the uninitiated, VMS is an… Continue

Stop me if you’ve heard these statements from Corporate or Agency Staffing Professionals “I never use job boards”, “We only use direct sourcing to find the best candidates”, “We post our jobs and select the best candidates” or maybe you’ve heard candidates tell you “I only work with one recruiter” or “I don’t post my resume”.
While I can respect someone for taking a stance for what they believe, I can’t stand by and let Recruiters and Candidates continue to make a HUGE mistake. I can… Continue

Social media is becoming ubiquitous. Websites like Facebook and YouTube are among the most popular websites racking up millions visits - ok, and they're also among my
most visited websites too. But beyond the entertainment factor, I'm realizing more and more that social media is an indispensable part of any serious job search. As a recruiter seeking a position right now, this is especially the case for me.
Why should social media be an integral part of your job… Continue

If you had a job this year you weren’t so lucky after all. If you did NOT have a job you probably played tennis, golf and did a lot of blogging, tweeting and other fun social stuff.
So here is the deal. For those of us that had to work like 80 hours a week, were little pissed. Sure we read your corny blogs and follow your tweets about looking for a job.
But now you’re back in the office, just like an eager Beaver, and wanting to take it all on.… Continue

Loyalty is not what it used to be… and it shouldn’t be.
By Jose Ruiz
Translated from articule published in CNNExpansion.com on Dec. 6, 2009
A few weeks ago my grandfather, who was a top ranking executive in the banking industry back in the 80’s, asked me what I thought about the perceived lack of loyalty in today’s employees. He was surprised to see that now, the average time an employee spends working for… Continue

You may well be aware of the HR Carnival
either as a contributor or reader. The last edition was published by @MikeVanDervort on his excellent blog Human Racehorses
I’ve always been a fan of the Vlog. That’s a video blog if you need a translation. I feel this gives you a truer feeling for the person behind the blog and for a blogger it can be a quick… Continue

I might piss off a lot of Recruiters here, but who cares.
Recruiters can’t be trusted. Right up there with Car Salesmen and boiler room Stock Brokers, we are some of the slickest back hand dealing corporate raiders in all the land.
We are the group of scoundrels at every convention trying to collect candidates.
We are the ones standing at the elevator handing out business cards.
We are the ones writing blogs on how to circumvent gate… Continue

I’m often asked how important a cover letter is when submitting a resume for a position, or if one is even necessary at all. My answer is: “It depends.”
Who is receiving your resume? If it’s being sent to a recruiter, or you are applying to an online system, you can be virtually guaranteed that a cover letter would not be even looked at, much less read. The volume of resumes that go through a normal recruiting process makes it all but… Continue

One of the most difficult, yet most valuable discoveries one can make on a job search is figuring out how to apply their transferable skills to a new opportunity. This particular ability is especially helpful for people wanting to make a career change or those looking to enter the job market for the first time.
A transferable skill is any ability--whether it is a natural talent or acquired skill nurtured through employment, schooling, etc.--that can be used in multiple… Continue

I feel the same way you do. I absolutely loved the "whole idea" of Linkedin professional networking and like you, I've accepted every invitation I've received, invited hundreds of recruiters (and others in our industry) to "please join my professional network on Linkedin." Most have accepted my invitation, some are "still pending," and no one has "declined" my invitation. I completely finished my profile at 100% two days ago, and it must have taken at least ten days… Continue
