Kill the Dog and Corral the Pony – Scott’s Sales Yoga Thought for the Week

Earlier this week, a salesperson told me about a difficult conversation she was about to have with a client. In asking for my advice, she said there was a chance this customer will ask for a price reduction and that she’d have to do a “dog and pony show” to convince them to keep working with her at the current rate.

I told her she needed to “kill the dog and corral the pony.” As you may suspect, there was a long pause on the other end of the phone after such a startling…

Resume Advice Scott Thompson Should Have Followed….Tell The Truth

Thanks, Scott.

I ought to send Scott Thompson a thank-you note.  The former CEO of Yahoo recently stepped down (or perhaps was gently pushed) after it was revealed that he had been … let’s just say “less than accurate” about his academic credentials.  He claimed to hold a degree in computer…

There is more in you than you think

Two weeks ago I took my eldest son to the 2012 Year 7 Orientation Day at his new secondary school. All the kids and parents were milling around before the event started. There was an excited buzz in the air as students from many different primary schools checked out their future school-mates.

As I was waiting for the formalities to start, I was looking around the hall and noticed the school motto plastered across the wall: There is more in…

Change is Inevitable

The past decade was an incredible time of change, not all of it positive. I’m confident most of us would have chosen different changes or circumstances instead of two recessions, two wars, multiple natural disasters, and terrorist attacks across the globe.

None of us has the ultimate power to change global events. We can, however, make changes in our businesses to make these our best years ever.…

RecruitFest - Part Deux

So I had a really great time at RecruitFest! I knew it would be awesome. I thought I would have known what to expect, since I went to the Original RecruitFest, but I guess that’s the thing with unconferences, they are fluid, organic, and changing. Personally I love the unconference style of things. Probably because I don’t actually like rules all that much :P

The People...

There were so many new faces at RF2! It was really great to meet so many wonderful people. I was able to… Continue

RECRUITFEST ROCKED!!

One week ago today, I was at the Grand Festival of Recruiting! I will never forget it, and want to share a few of my experiences from that day...

So Thursday night I was up late packing my things for a weekend away from home... I had planned to drive my car half way to Toronto and park it at a friends house, but I was running late that morning, and literally RAN to catch my train out of Burlington. I arrived at the InterContinental, still in my flip flops, with minutes to spare. I… Continue
