Should job boards and employment sites have these features? Just wondering...

As noted in previous posts, I’ve been thinking lately about what makes a job board good – or not. Below are a few questions to that effect – and yes, some employment sites have these features, but most do not. Maybe there absent features you’ve wondered about?

  • Voice input for search: Hey, if you’re…

How to Use Pinterest as a Recruiting Tool

Every good recruiter knows that social media is becoming more and more important when it comes to finding a great candidate. Just days ago Mashable reported that a social media monitoring service Reppler found that 90% of recruiters and hiring managers have visited a potential candidate’s…

Candidates- Clients looking for work, or looking for cheap counselling...(My How Time Flys) edition

Really, the last time I dropped by was March.....How is that possible? Well whatever the reason was, I'm sure it was a good one. The company underwent a transition from Radical Events to Social HR. And I grew from a lowly "Sourcers Apprentice" to a "Real Social One"We have picked up some really brave people to work alongside us; I keep my appointments, talk alot…

The History of Careers in America: Infographic

The History of Careers in America

From shifts in the economy to advances in technology, the career choices of Americans have changed dramatically since the 1900s. Since the days when “farmer” was a popular occupation, to the present when 50 percent of the top 20 fastest growing jobs are in healthcare, career choices have certainly shifted over time. To illustrate the shift, Bryant & Stratton College, an institution that has been at the forefront of workplace education & training since the…

What kind of a threat does LinkedIn pose to job boards? And what should they do about it?

A few weeks back I posed the question“What is a job board?”. In the process of trying to answer that question, I mentioned LinkedIn as a prime example of something thatlooks like a job boardacts like a job board, butclaims not to be a job…

Good ideas: how job seekers would make job boards better

I recently had the privilege of hosting #HFChat – the HireFriday Tweet-fest organized by @HRMargo and @CyndyTrivella.  HireFriday is all about helping job seekers find work. Recruiters, HR professionals, and the occasional job board doctor pose and answer common questions about the job hunt. It’s a wonderful event for all involved.

My subject – surprisingly enough! – was “Making job boards work for you”. The conversation ranged from the basics (setting up job alerts, using job boards…

Resume Advice Scott Thompson Should Have Followed….Tell The Truth

Thanks, Scott.

I ought to send Scott Thompson a thank-you note.  The former CEO of Yahoo recently stepped down (or perhaps was gently pushed) after it was revealed that he had been … let’s just say “less than accurate” about his academic credentials.  He claimed to hold a degree in computer…

Job Search Terms – What is that? Don’t I Just Apply for the Job I Want?

Job Search Terms – What is that? Don’t I Just Apply for the Job I Want?

NO – that is the long and short of it.

Recruiters – agency or in-house all use key words and search terms when sourcing for resumes. Where are they looking these days? Beyond…

6 Seconds on Resume Review: How do Job Seekers Get Noticed

There was a great piece that just came out by Vivian Giang on a study done using heat mapping about what a recruiter focuses on in the 6 seconds they have your resume in front of them. **Please note, as was pointed out to me by a colleague, this artlicle was produced by the Ladders, they have…

L*nked*n and Why You need to be Prof*le Perfect…. (part *)

Time to reach into that special bag possessed by The Sourcers’ Apprentice, and again, lets start the first chorus of a song I know (yes, I do) we’ll be revisiting again (and again…) until everyone is properly and completely in tune. If you fill in the blanks above, astute people will know that the topic of the week is part 1 dedicated to L*nked*n (oh, its just too much fun writing it this way). “I” see the topic as one of those covered by many “Experts” but followed by few, as everyone has…

What do you know?: the rise of skills testing sites

If you hire people, at some point you will have to hire for a position about which you know absolutely nothing.  Perhaps you’re hiring a chief technology officer, but your background is marketing and sales. Or you’re hiring a new accountant, and you only understand coding.

What do you do? Perhaps you turn to friends and colleagues who are more knowledgeable than you about a particular skill set. Or you figure out which certifications a ‘perfect’…

Candidate skill-set? Better yet, ask about their pet.

We can see what the resume says. But who is this person really? Is he or she a dog or cat person? Are they more like their German Shephard or their Tabby?

Don’t scoff. For all you extremely talented recruiters out their schooled in the latest behavioral role playing or SWOT-style interviewing techniques, are you really delving into this candidate’s hidden psyche from a fresh angle?

According to…

There is more in you than you think

Two weeks ago I took my eldest son to the 2012 Year 7 Orientation Day at his new secondary school. All the kids and parents were milling around before the event started. There was an excited buzz in the air as students from many different primary schools checked out their future school-mates.

As I was waiting for the formalities to start, I was looking around the hall and noticed the school motto plastered across the wall: There is more in…

“Search Friction” wins Nobel Prize for Economics

How often does a Nobel prize relate to your daily work? I'm thrilled to report that this week's Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to three brilliant professors who have changed the way the world looks at employment. Classic supply and demand theory would say that when the number of jobs available (demand) and number of people searching (supply) is equal, there should be zero unemployment. But we all know that it doesn't work that way.

Professors Peter A.…

Social Talent Best Practice Tips: Social Media Policies for Your Recruitment Business

Since we largely train recruiters and businesses how to leverage the power of social media as a sourcing tool, an employer branding tool and a business development tool, one common question we get asked all the time from nervous HR managers to company directors is advice on a social media policy that will enable…

Emergency in Ireland!

This week I had a really nice trip to Leitrim – Leitrim is a place I have rarely been to and it wouldn’t be somewhere that would spring to mind for a weekend getaway – but what beautiful scenery and what lovely friendly people! It reminded me that we should be proud of living in a country that has both modern cities and spectacular rural settings. Anyway, I digress, the reason I was in Leitrim was to visit the offices of the National Recruitment Services…
