If you hire people, at some point you will have to hire for a position about which you know absolutely nothing. Perhaps you’re hiring a chief technology officer, but your background is marketing and sales. Or you’re hiring a new accountant, and you only understand coding.
What do you do? Perhaps you turn to friends and colleagues who are more knowledgeable than you about a particular skill set. Or you figure out which certifications a ‘perfect’…Continue

We can see what the resume says. But who is this person really? Is he or she a dog or cat person? Are they more like their German Shephard or their Tabby?
Don’t scoff. For all you extremely talented recruiters out their schooled in the latest behavioral role playing or SWOT-style interviewing techniques, are you really delving into this candidate’s hidden psyche from a fresh angle?
Two weeks ago I took my eldest son to the 2012 Year 7 Orientation Day at his new secondary school. All the kids and parents were milling around before the event started. There was an excited buzz in the air as students from many different primary schools checked out their future school-mates.
As I was waiting for the formalities to start, I was looking around the hall and noticed the school motto plastered across the wall: There is more in…Continue

How often does a Nobel prize relate to your daily work? I'm thrilled to report that this week's Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to three brilliant professors who have changed the way the world looks at employment. Classic supply and demand theory would say that when the number of jobs available (demand) and number of people searching (supply) is equal, there should be zero unemployment. But we all know that it doesn't work that way.
Professors Peter A.…Continue

Since we largely train recruiters and businesses how to leverage the power of social media as a sourcing tool, an employer branding tool and a business development tool, one common question we get asked all the time from nervous HR managers to company directors is advice on a social media policy that will enable…Continue
This week I had a really nice trip to Leitrim – Leitrim is a place I have rarely been to and it wouldn’t be somewhere that would spring to mind for a weekend getaway – but what beautiful scenery and what lovely friendly people! It reminded me that we should be proud of living in a country that has both modern cities and spectacular rural settings. Anyway, I digress, the reason I was in Leitrim was to visit the offices of the National Recruitment Services…Continue

Per this week’s survey results from job boards, we’ve seen some changes over the past 12 months – not the least of which is increased optimism. Perhaps part of that is based on what HR and recruiting professionals are actually doing to find candidates. This installment of the …Continue

Words to the wise from a recruitment veteran of forty years- besides being dedicated to the recruiter's life (whatever that may mean to you) along with taking care of personal responsibilities with family, etc.--make an effort to have sideline activities such that they take you away from the rigors of recruiting (because traversing the terrain can become rigorous, even difficult).
I say this for two reasons—particularly for…Continue
If you could help your company increase it’s sales and profits and look like a superstar at the same time would you do it? I am amazed at how shortsighted most human resource and recruitment organizations are when it comes to helping their companies win more business. Sure these organizations help to hire and fire employees but…Continue
This is an old post from my blog "The Recruiting Unblog.", but as there have been a few posts recently on the topic of Twitter and Recruiters, I thought it was worth sharing. David Palmer asks"Does twitter do anything for recruiters?. This is how one recruiter figured out how to source from Twitter, and got great results. Be glad to hear of other success story's, and no…Continue

Following on from last weeks post, "Send us your resume and we will send you a cow!", there was some concern expressed in some of the comments as to how to manage the volume of response and disapointed candidates. Earlier this year I was involved in supporting a…Continue
There is power in your direct network. In fact, every individual, every person you may come in contact with is a potential business partner. Don't get me wrong, you must tread carefully and watch your privacy and your very safety, but when one begins with the end in mind - career management, long term goals, financial considerations, filling new requisitions, and on and on and on, one must be aware how valuable a network trully is.
The larger one's network the more apt…Continue

As a recruiter, it is obviously important that you match an employee and potential employer well. Aside from the obvious issue of compensation, there is the longer term issue of your reputation (you know what I mean - if too many of your placements don't "work out" you end up wearing this reputation and it can be hard to shake).
