As Monster Worldwide’s earnings report approaches, rumors that the job site is once again facing a possible buyout are swirling.
Over the past five years, Monster has been the subject of almost two dozen takeover rumors by electronic news services, brokerages or newspapers, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Towards the end…

We’ve been doing some recruiting recently and let’s not mince words: it’s a gigantic pain in the backside. My company is now entering a real growth situation and we’re starting to staff up and when starting the hiring process the other day it occurred to me just how backward and upside down the whole hiring malarkey is. So it got me thinking……’we’re hiring a web developer, in a perfect world, how would I like it to happen’ and this is what I came up…

From shifts in the economy to advances in technology, the career choices of Americans have changed dramatically since the 1900s. Since the days when “farmer” was a popular occupation, to the present when 50 percent of the top 20 fastest growing jobs are in healthcare, career choices have certainly shifted over time. To illustrate the shift, Bryant & Stratton College, an institution that has been at the forefront of workplace education & training since the…

Social Media is communication through multiple people. It is an open communication network powered by: social networks, news, blogs, videos, and job boards’, and social podcasting at so much more. My son recently graduated from college. As with so many young people just out of school, there were not a lot of job opportunities that awaited him. Rather than move back home (whew, we avoided that bullet), he and a group of friends piled into his car and took off to Boston to find their fortunes. My son is extremely energetic and is a bull dog when he sets his sights on something, so I knew he would find some sort of job to tide him over. I figured he would call me to say he’d found a job…

I wish I could find a lovely place to send job descriptions to die.
You know what I want instead? Job clouds.
Doesn't that sound lovely?
A job cloud is a lovely, puffy arrangement of projects and functions that need to be completed in order for a company to be successful. Job clouds can overlap across functional areas as the needs of the company change and the people in each cloud can change as their experience and education…

I heard that if you have a goal, you should never say that you're going to start it sometime in the future. Don't say, "I'll start that tomorrow morning" or "I'll do that after ____" because it creates a sense of non-urgency in your subconscious. If you can put it off for awhile, why bother doing it at all? If you want to achieve something, fully commit by taking the first step RIGHT NOW.
Nearly every HR and recruiting conference has a session about "The Future of Recruiting." What…

I watched the critically acclaimed movie "Up In The Air" last night - and I'll be honest: I wasn't all that impressed.
Initially.
I can't get the movie out of my mind (which is a good indicator of a
good movie) - and I've spent a lot of time thinking about what it has
said about our work force. Without giving anything away: George
Clooney's Company fires people. To sugar coat this…

In this blog post, I’d like to run an experiment in Crowdsourcing ideas for the Future of Recruiting. If this experiment is to be successful, it will require participation from members of the community. So, let’s get started!
The current model of recruiting was designed under a completely different set of assumptions….limited/non-existent technology, employment for life vs. free agency, regional/national employment vs. global, outsourcing, and limited metrics. Instead of being…

I recently read a blog which talked about how social media and networking sites were going to be the death of the recruiter. I disagree, if anything I believe the role of recruiter has become ever more important, but has also changed.
The argument in this blog was that the internet has enabled accessibility to candidates that would never have been possible before the internet revolution. Therefore by posting a few ads and doing some poking around on LinkedIn HR team can now source…

There are two types of companies – those that are growing and those that are slowly dying. This was a key lesson that I learnt some years ago from one of my mentors.
Trying to pick out a winner is not always easy, as some companies are suffering from the "boiling frog" syndrome, and it requires an alignment of the stars to get your selection perfect.
When we recruit for key roles, it is also vital to ensure we appoint candidates that have the potential for further personal…

In every economic environment, companies need to recruit and groom their next generation of leaders. Smart firms have learned from past mistakes and cannot afford to fall behind in leadership recruiting again. Hiring summer interns is a cost-effective and essential tool for leadership recruiting regardless of business cycles.

It has been several years since the more astute professional has seen gathering storm clouds across the horizon.
And, there are a multitude of reasons why not just the U.S., but the entire world, is facing extremely troubling times ahead. There's even talk that what lies ahead will be even more challenging than what our grandparents (and great-grandparents) faced during the 1920s.
Now is not the time for a weak heart or complacency. The mother of trouble is bred…

I sit here pondering the future of blogging. A couple of weeks ago I penned a tweet on twitter that I was "wondering if microblogging will replace macroblogging?" Those few, deceptively simple words, caused me to continue to ponder. Have I lost you? Let's catch up.
Not too long ago we gained the majority of our written information from books, magazines, newspapers, and other printed material. Those media all still exist but the…
