Insurance is growing

Hey recruiters,

I specialize in insurance, and we are humming along. If you have a pulse (and I'm assuming you have an internet connection since you can see this) you have seen/heard lots of doom & gloom talk out there. I live and specialize in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Texas area.

This is my best encouraging word for the industry. We are looking for insurance sales and service people alike. There is a lot of action in our immediate geographical area as well as nationwide. I guess… Continue

'Tis the season to be hired: Advice for employers

When it comes to holiday hiring, employers need to put together a recruitment plan well before the radio stations start playing “Jingle Bell Rock” every half hour. Whether you’re the hiring manager of a restaurant franchise or you own a small clothing store in the mall, there’s no denying that business picks up starting as early as November 1. In fact, according to an article in The San Francisco Chronicle, both independent and chain stores have seen a rise in sales between 45 and 170 percent… Continue

Justifiable Hiring Optimism?

It’s difficult to put your best foot forward when your China hiring report is released as major financial institutions have just gone into a major meltdown.

Such is life.

Of course, the Hudson Report for July to September 2008 is as deep and accurate as you would normally expect from them. We just have to adjust many of the results downwards.

The trends should be much the same as in the report but the optimism is much less warranted. 2009 looks like a bit of a… Continue

Top 5 Ways to Fail at Hiring

Top 5 Ways to Fail at Hiring

Posted by Jason at 9:14 PM Links to this post

If you're in the majority of businesses out there, you handle most or all of your recruiting in-house- no recruiters or staffing agencies in your hip pocket... or wallet. That is, you write your own job postings or advertisements, you research and make your own media buys, and you handle the pre-screening and interview process. If your company attends career fairs, you and your team conceive the design for your… Continue

Beeeeep Beeeeep Beeeep Beeeeep... or Detecting Tonal Differences in Searches

They say there are two seasons in Washington state: Rainy season and Construction season. Although I have heard that slogan used for other areas in the country, it is particularly true in The State of Liquid Sunshine.

Driving home from work, I found myself approaching a construction site. Noting the neon orange signs, traffic cones, and large portable reader board lit up with orange lights asking me to merge left, I dutifully signaled, cleared, and proceeded to change lanes. Now I… Continue

ATTENTION ALL RECRUITERS WHO STAFF EVENTS

While organizing 4 job fairs in different states this month, I've been keenly aware of our need to differentiate our events from the rest. When it comes right down to it, all that really matters is that local job seekers find good opportunities, and the local employers who exhibit connect with high quality local candidates. Sounds simple, hunh?

Actually, it really is. When we hosted events earlier this year and last fall, we were able to get a much higher quality of job seeker than… Continue

Sample Interview Questions and a New Buzzword!

There are a lot of buzz words floating around in business these days. Mentoring, Coaching, Paradigms, Teamwork, etc… But I’d like to give you the scoop on really impressing someone who is interviewing you for a position. I like to call it the New Buzzword- WORK ETHIC.

I’ve interviewed numerous people for positions and fellow colleagues ask me what it is that impresses me the most from applicants. It is too easy to ask people to tell if they’re a team player or if they’re coachable.… Continue

Come On Baby!! The Waiting Game...

Here I am in sweltering Phoenix, AZ, waiting impatiently for a certain new arrival to make an entrance. I am the designated Birth Coach for my sister who is having her second child, and this little boy (Joel) is taking his sweet time in exiting the womb! My view of this process from the Birth Coach side has really changed the way I have traditionally understood this role.

When you have your own kids, and you're the female, you just expect the father to Man Up - be there for you,… Continue

Nature v. Nurture... Understanding Process, Change, and the True Nature of Things

I remember having debates with classmates regarding the question of nature versus nurture - which one is more important? Are all things predetermined by your genetic code? Is the environment in which you were raised more relevant in the formation of your personality, your likes and dislikes?

I got to thinking about this the other day at the hairdresser's. Yes - the hairdresser's. Going in for my tri-annual cut/color ritual, I noticed that the weather outside was beautiful. The… Continue

Hiring Practices That Kill Deals… or How to Avoid Faceplanting in the Net

In the early spring of this year, the flowers were blooming, birds were singing, and I began to plan my summer garden. The previous year was a complete bust for my container garden. Poor location coupled with an unusually cool and cloudy summer doomed my basil and tomatoes from the outset, and my peppers didn’t fare much better. Relocating the container garden to my back yard would afford it better sunshine (if there was sunshine to be had) and a location that would make it easier to water and… Continue

Utilizing the Correct Communication Tool

Years ago before debit card usage became the norm, writing checks for goods and services was commonplace. A friend of mine went to her neighborhood grocery store, bought the items she needed, and patiently stood in the checkout line. When the clerk told her how much money she owed, she pulled out her checkbook and fished around in her pocket for a writing implement. Hand clasped upon a cylindrical object, she drew it out of her pocket and went to fill out her check… until she realized the… Continue

One Bad Apple... Or... The Blight Amongst Us

Taking advantage of our recently gorgeous Northwest sunshine the other day, I decided to take a walk. As I started out on my three mile trek, I noticed a home that had a beautifully landscaped yard. The grass was green and weed-free, the flowers thrived in rich brown soil with plenty of sunshine, and there were decorative pots on the porch containing healthy looking plants. This was the kind of yard that made you want to go home and set your yard on fire, you know?

Except for this… Continue

Your Achilles Heels or, Don't Go Near The Water! There's a Very Scary Frog In There...

Everybody has their weakness, that one irrational fear that triggers an uncontrollable-squeal-like-a-little-girl reaction in you. Do you know what I’m talking about? There’s no explaining this fear; it’s primal and undeniable. For some people this fear is manifested in spiders, or snakes, or even squirrels. Mine is frogs.

I’ve always hated frogs, ever since I was a little girl. Strangely and perversely enough, one of my dad’s more “interesting” hobbies was frog jumping. My dad would… Continue

Today's bargains can cloud future hiring decisions

Everyone loves a bargain, but when hiring talented professionals it can sometimes come back to bite you as you continue to grow your staff. We recently worked with a client that has experienced just such a problem and the fix is hard to swallow. The client has (with our help) found some very talented professional as they moved from a three to a ten person team. Originally they weren’t able to offer top dollar salaries, but because of the strong growth and current technology they’re jobs were… Continue
