Who is hiding all of the jobs?

We’ve all seen the same statistic that approximately 80% of jobs are unadvertised. Some refer to this as the hidden job market.  Alternatively, we’ve also seen the statistic that approximately 80% of employers advertise job opportunities online either through their own website, a mainstream job board or a niche industry site. So, while those two statistics refer to separate measurements, they are somewhat intertwined and intriguing.

I frequently encounter content directed at…

How To Increase Referrals from Candidates You Did Not Hire

If you have a candidate that you cannot place, give them a gift they can use. Why? It gives the impression that you care and that can easily translate into more referrals. When I was running a full desk, I gave out an ebook of job search strategies to everyone I met with and encouraged them to pass it on. What happened? A significant increase in referrals. (It works!) All that being said, please consider my (now) free ebook, "How To Find a Job Now (...and never have to look again!) and…

Whatever you are doing, stop it and hire Lamia Gouda!

Hire Lamia Gouda now!!!

I stumbled across a gem today! While searching for something else, I discovered the video resume of Lamia Gouda. Curiosity took the better of me and I watched a VERY funny and engaging pitch of a very talented woman: Actress, Translator, Video Editor, Voice Over Talent and Stylist. She speaks multiple languages (Arabic, French and English) and not only that, she is also quite the entrepreneur. Check out…

LinkedIn has 161 Million members - I was the 980,469th to sign up. What number were you?

LinkedIn is of my favourite things about the Internet. Period. I love what it does, I love the way it does it, and I really hope they don't mess it up like some other large social networks have recently. I'm not alone in my love for LinkedIn, and with 160 million users there's a lot of LinkedIn love going around, but while some users quantify their LinkedIn love with the number of connections they have, they're missing the point - it's not how many connections you have - it's quality of your…

Question of the Week: Can a Job Seeker Be Too Eager?

Answer: Yes.

There is an adage that says, "Desperate times call for desperate measures."

Please do not apply that adage to your job search.

A job seeker who I met via Twitter some months ago recently asked me if there was such a thing as being overly eager/aggressive when using social…

Imagine you have been gifted $20,000 towards the purchase of a new car. You begin to make your mental wish list. You narrow it down to 2 or 3 brands, a particular dealership, a top choice of color, your must have accessories, and a price range. If you didn't take these…

Job Search 3.0: Strategies to Organize and Optimize Your Search (Part 1)

Yesterday afternoon, I was consulting a job seeker via phone who reached out to me through LinkedIn. She's a two time college graduate working on a Ph.D to be finished in 2013. Brains, check. Decent work history, check. Yet one thing became apparent. She had no concrete job search strategy. Two…

Willing and Unable: Trapped in Unemployment

I was browsing my LinkedIn Groups this morning, and a colleague shared this 60 Minutes segment in which she was spotlighted. I'm sure each of you knows someone who is talented, college-educated, life-experienced, and willing to work, but unable to secure employment.

What can we do - as advocates and stakeholders in the community of recruiting - to help? Even if it…

Cover or Uncovered???

I’m often asked how important a cover letter is when submitting a resume for a position, or if one is even necessary at all. My answer is: “It depends.”

Who is receiving your resume? If it’s being sent to a recruiter, or you are applying to an online system, you can be virtually guaranteed that a cover letter would not be even looked at, much less read. The volume of resumes that go through a normal recruiting process makes it all but… Continue

How Search Engines are Impacting Job Boards

Yahoo! & Wikia - User Engaged Search

Yahoo! just announced, as part of their SearchMonkey initiative, the launch of Search Gallery on Wednesday and TechCrunch has a piece on the new and improved (“doesn’t suck”) release of Wikia Search. Both efforts, although they use very different methods, put tools in the hands of the community to offer a better search experience.
