Jobseekers – Get yourself noticed

Times are tough and if you are a job-seeker you need to get yourself noticed. Almost everywhere you look now there is a graduate with high hopes and quite unrealistic expectations of finding that ideal well paid job when they are fresh out of university in what is a tough economic climate. Although the current market place for jobs for graduates is tough, it is not impossible to succeed in securing that first role, below are some of my tips on how to stand out from the…

3 Tips for Jobseekers on Navigating the Job Market

State of the Economy

The economy is a dichotomy that as soon as you think you have it figured out, the projections you felt were safe get thrown upside down.  I've been in the staffing industry for 14 years and recently decided to add up how many of those years have been recessionary and I came up with nine to ten.  The trends seem to indicate that the economy is improving at a tangible pace.  For instance, Dice just released a statistic last week of…

What experience are your candidates getting?

Nine years recruitment experience has made me sensitive to the struggles of a Jobseeker. All too often I hear about the very lengthy and daunting recruitment processes that follow.

Unfortunately for Jobseekers, clicking the ‘apply’ button for that perfect job can mean being redirected to a site and an application process of 6+ pages to complete; an arguably ‘necessary’ requirement for gaining candidate information.

But are the words ‘lengthy’ and ‘daunting’ really the words an…

JOBSEEKERS: ARE YOU ASKING INTERVIEWERS THESE FIVE ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS?

Expert advice from Dave Wood of www.northwestwebjobs.co.uk .

Anyone that’s ever attended a meeting, or a presentation, will be familiar with that awkward moment when the attendees are asked “Have you got any questions?”. How many times have we all sat, silently, in a room full of people experiencing a collective mental blankness?

This same situation often arises in job interviews. Only,…

Jobseekers, don't let the search get the best of you

A recent entry, The Angry Young Job Seeker written by Amy Ala, speaks of the ignorance and downright audacity of a talented gentleman this recruiter was trying to place. Demanding, belligerent,…

The system is not perfect

Some of my customers, who are jobseekers, for the most part think recruiters—internal and third-party alike—are unfair and the reason for their failure to get a job. They think recruiters are only concerned with two things: 1) determining if my customers meet 10 out of 10 requirements and 2) want them to work for peanuts. I know this is not necessarily true, I know that recruiters have a job to do, which is to find what the employer wants. This is how recruiters get paid.

I’ve read…

Western Canadian Labour Shortage Great News for Qualified Jobseekers

Despite what many fans of the ancient Mayan calendar are predicting, the world most likely will not end in 2012. Instead, we need to prepare for positive changes in the economy and labour market.  This is going to be a year of strong growth and revitalization in several important industries such as it’s also going to be a year where many more baby boomers celebrate their 65th birthday and retire, continuing to retire as a generation through to 2029, creating hard to fill vacancies throughout…

What IS a talent community anyway?

I keep hearing so much hot air and bluster from social media 'experts' about how talent communities are the way to go. But what does it all mean?

My understanding is that the idea is that companies try and make their customers, or in this instance, potential candidates, talk to each other. Engage in a cosy little chat within an online community with the notion of sharing information, opinion, ideas etc. But why???

Overshadowed only by marriage and buying a home, an individual's…

Phishing for Desperate Jobseekers

The recent closure of SpamIt.com in Russia has successfully reduced global spam by 20% over the past few days. It's bad enough that spammers are shilling ED drugs - as if sexual potency were the solution to the world's ills - but I've recently seen an uptick in jobseeker spam. This is simply insidious and unconscionable because the senders…

I am Black and I am Proud

Sometimes I happen upon a bit of information that is so stunning, so out-of-this-world crazy, that I simply dismiss it as media hyperbole. This is likely what happened when someone mentioned Sammy Sosa's recent skin transformation, apparently an elective process, achieved by a "skin softening" cream.

For those of you as well-versed in baseball as I am, you likely remember… Continue

What do your job board customers want?

When was the last time you asked your job board customers what they want? Not just a one-off question to a few clients – but an systematic, organized survey of everyone who uses your site? Employers and job seekers?

A recurrent theme in the ‘job boards are dying’ blog posts that I see is a feeling by recruiters, employers, and job seekers that the ‘big boards’ are out of touch. In other words, they don’t know what their customers want. Now, I’m guessing that they would argue with… Continue
