Live Hard, Sell Hard: When Phone Screenings Go Wrong

Some months ago, I was phone screened for a Senior Recruiter role with a Fortune 500 retail company. During the phone screening, which lasted 75 minutes, I talked for roughly 10-12 minutes. Instead of digging deeper into the responsibilities of the role I applied for, the Recruiter spent most of…

Phone Screens: Five Tips to Favorably Impress

MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN

Popularized by "mad men" marketing wonks in days gone by, "must be present to win" is the tag line you've heard a thousand times in contest rules. Face it, no one is going to hand you the keys to the pretty sports car in the window based on you scribbling your name on the equivalent of a cocktail napkin - you have to be there when the drawing is conducted with legitimate identification at the ready. With the evolution of online media, being "present" has taken on new meaning. With the a few… Continue

To Voicemail or Not to Voicemail, That is the Question

I'll never forget going to visit one of my branch recruiting offices and watching a rookie recruiter dial and hang up, over and over again. I walked over and asked her why she did not leave her client prospects or candidates a voicemail message and she told me, "I never leave messages because nobody ever calls me back."

So how do you get call backs? Why do some people get a ton of incoming calls to the office in response to their messages while others are forced to just make outbound… Continue

Want to see a grown man cry??? Take away his iPhone.

September 30th I attended MoMo Boston held at the Boston Harbor Hotel where there was the usual meet and greet of some of the finest minds in America but also a great panel discussion regarding mobile advertising, mobile platforms, the best types of phones, etc. Needless to say, out of a room of 200, there were probably 11 women. Oh well – it meant more white wine for me. And NO! I do not JUST go for the open bar – Jeez.

My reason for attending was compounded by the fact that one of… Continue

Ma Bell Called, Your Hired (or Not)

In a recent Wall Street Journal article titled "The New Trouble on the Line", the writer provided keen details on how important phone interviews are to the process. I know many of our clients are conducting highly detailed and multiple phone interviews. This article brought back a flurry of memories and reminds us how important it is to prep people for the phone interview(s).

The extensive nature of the interview is not limited to full time employees. We also find more extensive… Continue

Scary Phone

Whatever you do in the recruitment space it's likely that a significant part of your day is spent on the phone (or should be). With the incredible technological advances we've all seen over the last 20 years, the phone remains our lifeline. And still I know many people who suffer from call reluctance. They can always justify why they should spend their time doing something else but the bottom line is that they are scared to pick up the phone and call. Following are a few…

How to rock your candidates world... So simple

There are so many of us out there looking to recruit the same candidates, and we all have our pitch about why our opportunity is better, but what is going to stand out in the mind of the candidates? The personal time we take to get to know them and understand what they are really looking for. I would love to pose the question, how many of us really take the time to get to know our candidates and make sure we are being their consultant and not just pushing them through the process to make a… Continue

Most Common Phone Interview Questions

The Phone interview plays a crucial role in a candidate’s pre-hire process. This means that the employer has reviewed the candidate’s resume and or application and they are showing some interest which is a positive step forward, although the candidate is still far away from being hired! The phone interview in many cases may be a make-it or break-it for many candidates as this is mainly a way for the employer to verify if the “you” the candidate are both a cultural and technical fit for their… Continue
