Poverty & Jobs In America

While many of us have chosen to look forward toward to 2014 and beyond, I’ve chosen to briefly look backward to the recent 50th Anniversary…

Should Recruitment Agencies do more for less?

In the current Global economic climate do Recruitment Agencies need to share the burden of the economic recovery and do more for less? Some would say they need to wake up to the fact that customers are no longer prepared to pay or afford the exorbitant fees they have enjoyed for many years.

Get Ready for the Double Dipper

When you say it like that, it sounds almost like it might be fun.  Perhaps a bit of an adrenaline ride at Alton Towers?  Afraid not – albeit it may provide a bumpy ride for a few of us.

Well it’s official.  As of 9:30 this morning we learned we have entered the joys of a double dip recession, and for us that means it’s time to work out how this will impact the world of flat fee online recruitment.  Before we all get too excited, what’s it all about?  Well, for those of you not…

Making the Most of Life's Lemons: Life After My 3rd Layoff

Everyone has heard the cliché, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Well, there's one dangerous assumption within that statement - that I actually have access to water and a pitcher.

I experienced my first layoff at the tender age of 19. After having worked at Castle Rock Entertainment part-time for four years, about 100 of us were laid off when Ted Turner's company bought us out. I landed my next job at…

Why do we lie about unemployment?

There are things that seriously I do not understand….let me re-phrase, I understand why they are done. What amazes me is that people believe the people the spit the garbage out to us like we a herd of cattle waiting to be fed. Unemployment – what is the situation? It is a total crap shoot. Sectors are rising and falling more than any historical average, we have no known correlation anymore between the economy and jobs due to technical productivity gains, globalization, and of course the debt…

Economic Expansion and Jobs: Is there a link?

We operate under the impression that the past continues to repeat itself and therefore patterns can be traced and the leveraged to make more informed decisions when a similar scenario presents itself.  But what if the scenario is the same but the architecture that has repeated itself…

Disasters – Can your EMPLOYEES Recover?

Try to imagine this scenario: You are a BP Oil or Halliburton employee anywhere along the Gulf Coast, attending a friend’s backyard barbecue on a recent Sunday, and in between sips of beer and nibbles of chips and dip, you hear, over and over, “Oh my god, you…

Thriving in a Non-Recovery

Recruiting is, and always will be, a business that faces ever-changing circumstances. Veterans and rookies of recruiting must possess equal determination. In great times we must avoid complacency. In challenging times we must adapt. Having seen previous recessions, this recruiter has also had the thrill of the subsequent recoveries. This time around, recovery seems elusive. Some recruiters have patiently held on in the hopes that something or somebody will ride in a save the day by creating a… Continue

Happy New Year Everyone!! We enter a new decade…

2009 on the whole would probably be a year for most companies and people to forget. The implications of the credit crunch which began in 2008 were fully felt within 2009 across the world. End-Clients deferred projects which had no immediate return this resulted in… Continue

The Story of the Fisherman and the Recruiting Recovery of 2010

My friends, there is a huge ocean out there containing many species of fish, enough for everyone!

There was once a fisherman who was only interested in one type of fish. And that fish was the lobster. The reason why he was only interested in the lobster was because he loved lobsters. He knew where to find them, he knew how to catch them, and he knew many different ways to prepare delicious lobster meals. He had relationships with and belong to a network of lobster lovers; merchants… Continue

A Little Light in the Darkness

After a year of non-stop bad news it is good to see little shards of light emerge from the darkness. The recent European Chamber Business Confidence Survey 2009, done in conjunction with Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, produces the necessary illumination.

The confidence booster is to be found in the fact that 37% of the 300 European companies surveyed said that China is… Continue

Market Bouncing Back, Complete Recovery in Sight!!!

You are reading further than the initial headline for a reason. You want to believe. You want a little taste of something that has been sadly absent from business in America of late, positivity. Yesterday, I had a person tell me that he thinks that the United States may never recover, that we may never get back to where we were. The timbre of business conversations harkens back to the “Dot Bomb” fiasco several years ago, only magnified. The damage to the American psyche intensifies every day we… Continue

Greed is Good!

A catch cry of the 80's! A time of opulence, bad style and probably even worse music. It was the predecessor of the last recession, a time most famously known in Australia as "the recession we had to have". We may look back and snicker and scorn, but what will the next generation say about us? I think my hair and suit will stand the test of time, but who knows :)

Did "Greed is Good" make a comeback? Like the fashion? If not, what will people in the… Continue
