Downtrodden and defeatist attitudes need not apply

Being on the corporate side of the recruiting world I regularly field calls from agency and independent recruiters looking for business. There is nothing wrong with this, and I actually enjoy many of the conversations I've had with these recruiters and salespeople. Many of them are quite personable and have begun to cement a pretty good relationship regardless of the number of jobs I can have them work on.

Earlier today I got a call from one such person, but rather than feeling good… Continue

Do underdogs even stand a chance?

Right around this time of year I always seem to have a soft spot for the slightly (or severely) disadvantaged. For some reason March Madness is something I can't pass up and I always love a good Cinderella story. Which got me to thinking - there are underdogs everywhere, not just in sports, and in times like these it must be tough to be in the shoes of the little guy.

Clearly recruiting feels the sting of a bad economy, and I'd wager to say it makes things very tough for the 'mom and… Continue

When does the recruiting process end?

I recently had a candidate accept an offer to join my company in our Mississippi location. He has already signed the letter, put a down payment on a new residence, and has returned his direct deposit form. However, I still get calls nearly every day asking for one last bit of assistance, advice, or direction. This got me to thinking - when will my commitment to this soon-to-be employee end?

First, we need to recognize that there are varying degrees of responsibility in the recruiting… Continue

Resume Blasting - Mistake

Resume Blasting is something that I have a strong opinion on - that is NEVER do it. It looks desperate, something that a less qualified candidate would do in a shotgun approach to offload their resume to as many sharks as possible. Does one really think that works? A recruiter or HR manager receives an email from one of the blasting services - something that is non personal and gives little attention to the person whose resume they are sending. Better yet…..the professional using the service… Continue

When is it OK to fire your client?

Maybe I'm just thinking out loud, but it seems that for every great customer you find, there are a handful you are indifferent to, and a couple that can make your blood boil at the drop of a hat. The list of offenses is a mile long and could be anything from never giving specific feedback on disqualifications up to refusing to pay a fee. No matter what the transgression, recruiters still need to make placements to get paid, so when do you move a company from the 'client' to the 'source'… Continue

Quality versus Quantity: The Dilemma of “Open” Networking

I hesitate to say that I am not an open networker because, to many people, that makes me a completely closed networker and that's not true either. “Open networking” is a term used to describe people who will accept any social network invitation they receive without regard to relationship, approach or justification for the invitation.

Recently I received a call from fellow recruiter / blogger / twitterer Heather Gardner. Among other… Continue

The Seduction of the LinkedIn Invite

“And you are….? And you are here because…? And you are looking for…?...”

Many years ago there was a funny skit on Saturday Night Live about an absolutely clueless - and very obnoxious, receptionist who did not recognize very recognizable celebrity characters when they arrived at his desk. The receptionist would ask multiple questions like the ones above. The skit would go on and on with the questions and answers becoming more and more ridiculous.

I often feel like that… Continue
