In between, the recruitment team (or person) may perform any or all of the following tasks: creating a job description, advertising the job, sourcing, screening, interviewing, performing background checks (including references, credit checks, and…

Block out the noise and make a presentation!

Am I old school? You bet. I’ve survived. Not only have I survived – I’m living the American Dream! I say this not to boast but to make a rather simple…

The More Things Change, The More They Stay the Same

Recently, I was looking over some of my recruiting material from about 14+ years ago. I reviewed all the sections about sourcing candidates (from cold calls to referrals), picking up job leads from newspapers (remember those) to references and many other "old school" techniques. Here is what I realized; Nothing today is really NEW!

Think about it; what "inventions" are really new? Data storage; sure the way we store the data has changed from… Continue

Old School Recruiting and Social Media

I got into a conversation with the guy standing on a step-ladder changing light bulbs while I waited for my wife as she browsed the merchandise in a boutique clothing store.

Being the old school recruiter that I am, I quickly discovered that his name was Fabian, he was the owner of the store, it was newly opened store in the area, and we were his very first customers.

The reason why I am blogging about this conversation is because this guy said a few things that has some… Continue

Back to School Time - SEO Style

Although SEO seems to be the new buzz in recruiting web 2.0 strategies, it has actually been used for years as a tactic to increase sales for online businesses.

SEO and how it fits into the recruiting industry is greatly misunderstood. I completely agree with Marvin in that SEO is not enough , but it makes me wonder who said that it was the golden ticket to begin with.

SEO Is… Continue

Things I learned as a 16 year old that help me now!

Learnings that last a lifetime.

I did work experience as a 16 year old Grad 10 student. I dutifully put on my best outfit, nice shirt, pressed pats, skinny leather tie (it was the fashion) and turned up at the local city council to spend time in their Accounts Department and to be honest... I was bored to death, no one would talk to me (unless I instigated conversation, which as a young boy in a world of grown ups, some of which were parents of my friends, wasn't easy), they gave me… Continue

Thanks for everything, we're laying you off. Merry Christmas! (Days 3 & 4)

See the previous blog entry here.

So on to the weekend!

The strange part is 2 of them were offers and I hadn't even spoken to anyone yet! How strange is that?

First… Continue
