Every few months or so, a new game app comes around that my 16 year old daughter and all of her friends go crazy over. They sit there in a deep stare, barely moving, likely not even breathing - then BOOM - an eruption of disappointment, followed by the resolve to do even better next time, even if it means subsidizing their time spent on homework or interacting with their… Continue

Any employee who has gone through the dramatic economic downturn that began in 2008 knows, for the last few years, the mantra has been, “keep your head down, keep working, and be glad you have a job.” During this period, employers instituted round after round of layoffs and the remaining employees continued to absorb more work… Continue

I'm excited about my latest white paper. It is filled with great information and data regarding employee turnover and the impact it is having on organizations. A new year. The flip of a few digits on a calendar and somehow that magically allows us to renew ourselves, our goals, and our ambitions (professionally and personally). Some of those goals seem very good and things that everyone should aspire to. But sometimes the object of our focus is just a smaller aspect of a bigger issue that needs to be addressed. Without taking on the bigger… Continue

In practically all cases, an organization strives to identify and select the best person for the job.
Ads for open positions are overflowing with lists of requirements for experience and education in an effort to prevent those that don’t meet stated criteria from applying. Nevertheless, various statistics reveal the low ratio of qualified applicants versus immense volumes of unqualified… Continue

Effective recruiting is what turns an average company into a great company, and HR professionals can turn not only to other professional organizations for best practices, but also to other institutions that seek to recruit top talent.
Fraternities and sororities, for example,… Continue

Remember when you were young and just starting your adult life and you said that you wanted to get married, but you wanted to wait a while "until we can afford it"? Or when you were a newlywed and people started asking you what your plans were for having kids, and you answered with, "We've… Continue

Branding is important and we all know that. A strong brand can make a company, and a weak brand can break it. Employer branding is even more important and I’ve mentioned why several times – a good employer branding takes an organization’s company culture, values, and story and makes it part of the overall brand. Moreover, employer branding is meant to directly impact an… Continue

The big news in the last week seems to be that Facebook can tell you if your relationship is going to work. No, they're not clairvoyant, it's based on research from Jon Kleinberg of Cornell University surrounding something called "dispersion." Jon… Continue

As I do most mornings I was watching Good Morning America and across the bottom of the screen in their news scroll was an item which stated that Target had announced that they were removing from their employment application all questions pertaining to criminal records or offenses. Which poses the question above—is this a sign of the times or a bad move?
There is much that can be said for either response. In a letter dated August 29, 2013 the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in… Continue

I recently joined a Global RPO solution onsite at an investment bank. Making the leap from agency, especially as an established consultant where I managed to build an innovative sourcing desk servicing an entire business; into a new position and environment was a huge risk for me.
I went with my gut and chose carefully, selecting an RPO that had a…

Talent Analytics is one of the biggest trends in today’s HR. The need to understand your employees and what drives their performance for your organization is critical for companies to be successful. And while I could write more about this, I think it’s a better use of our time to point to Josh Bersin’s great article before we begin,… Continue

For a few years now, I have tried to spread the word that recruitment strategies and processes would be undergoing a radical transformation away from what recruiters have been doing for the past 10-15 years. The shift in technology advances and possibilities, along with a new generational workforce would demand it.… Continue

Here we go… another horrible example of the type of cold call/emails some recruiters are sending.
I’ve never heard of the recruiter that sent this - who according to their LI profile, has been an agency recruiter since 2008 and has a whopping 36 connections. I don’t recall having any prior interactions with their agency and don’t know how they have my email address. What I do know is this a one of the lamest messages I’ve seen in quite a while.
The email… Continue
