Why are people the way they are? I think it is far more complicated than nature vs. nurture. I have five siblings that were all raised pretty much the same way. My mother had/has very strong values and didn't lighten up on those values as she aged. So I can say, with much certainty, that she was as strict with the baby as she was the oldest. The point is..., we, the six of us, were raised the same way and we couldn't be more diverse. We have the same bloodline and, still, we are different.
There are those that would argue that "you are who were meant to be" from birth..., there is no chance to alter your core, to change or become a different person... This will haunt you if you've ever been Myers-Brigg'ed.
I believe that every instance, every circumstance, and every relationship continually refines who we are: changes, alters, polishes or scars what once was the "core you".
Kierkegaard said, "The deeper natures never forget themselves and never become anything else than what they were." I do not agree. My core is absolutely, almost completely different than what it was 23 years ago when I was 21, just stepping into adulthood. I have aged, gained wisdom, and relish the chance to change and learn even more. These activities, LIFE and more, change you. How can they not?
Isn't it our responsibility, as contributing members of society, to continually strive for a better way to do things, a better way to live, a better way to communicate and treat one another? I would say, "yes", it truly is our responsibility. Living with conviction and zest moves lives forward, away from stagnation or contempt. Connections made reinforce reasons.
Using this thought in my work has brought more joy and purpose then first imagined. I am not saying it is easy. It is not. But remembering then trying is worth the effort. Hannibal Barca said “We will either find a way, or make one.” Of course, this was attached to a military campaign but why can't it work in life, in recruiting? Using strategy, forethought, and a desire to enlighten or educate will lead us to the tree laden with fruit - a sweet spot to be.
Placing great importance on the needs of clients, hiring managers and candidates, above ourselves, is the better way. What goes around comes around.
Words to work by.
