Job board Ranked #2 Source of New Hires, Second only to Referrals (mostly employee referrals)

Today, Mark and Gerry of CareerXRoads released their latest 2010 Source of Hire Report.

Two of the most notable changes in the numbers this year are the following:

* Job boards became the #2 source of new hires, behind referrals.

* Social media sites still don't account for a large percentage of hires.

To me, it's not that much of a surprise that social recruiting and social media still aren't showing big numbers. I've never heard of a company filling 100 open orders from any of these sites. While this is quickly changing, I think it will take a couple of years.

Additionally, companies don't seem to have much abilities to track social media hires, just like their search engine optimization (SEO), and pay-per-click campaigns. Again, these will ultimately evolve.

The stats for social media might also be a little skewed due to the survey respondents are mostly Fortune 100 type companies. If the stats were compiled with small to medium sized business, with fewer resources, we might see a different story.

In all, it's great to see that all the bloggers who posted blogs about how "job boards are dead" are now eating their socks. Not only are job boards growing as a significant source of hires, but they did it when revenues were way down.

I think we'll see job seekers learning how to flex their social media muscle, as they start realizing the importance of keyword optimizing their LinkedIn Profiles. Additionally, we'll see significant recruiting starting to occur through offerings like Jobvite, Branchout, and Jibe.
