I went to the circus a few days ago with my kids. As I was watching a great show and performance by all of the artists performing, I couldn’t help but wonder about how many thousands of hours of dedicated training it must have taken by these artists to acquire the skills, strengths and mental focus for them to pull through their gigs. It made me reflect upon where these people find their motivation. I guess they are getting a real satisfaction from entertaining and pleasing their audience (the clients), put a smile on a young girls face or see the marvel in grownups watching the magician’s tricks. Moreover, I believe a big driver for the artists is knowing when they have pulled off a great performance – not only in the audience’s mind, but also to their own knowledge, as they are aware of all the small details that an untrained eye can’t see.
This is when I realized that this motivation is something we, hopefully, all practice in our profession. For us, it is all about pleasing our clients; candidates and companies, giving them the best possible experience and eye openers (when needed). In order to do that, we constantly evaluate the way we carry out a phone call, how a pitch is working out and how quickly the process is moving forward – to keep our clients smiling. We are constantly crafting, re-designing small details in our work in order to get the best possible outcome for all parties engaged. We work hard to master our profession and perform at our peak levels every minute and hour of every day. Going home after a day when you have excelled means going home with a smile of satisfaction on your face.
This is the kind of motivation and drive we are looking for in our clients (candidates and companies). And by the way, if you’re not feeling this way about your job, try to find something that you are really interested in and make it your profession.
