Training your recruitment managers will impact your results. An obvious fact and yet many business owners are unsure where to start. With some many different aspects to a recruitment manager’s role it is important to start the training process in areas that will add the most impact from day one. Here are three key skills that will do just.
Coaching works. It is a known and established fact that when individuals are coached there results improve. You only need to look at the growth of coaching and you will understand how valid this process is. As a business owner your recruitment manager needs to deliver results for you and the business through the people they manage. An effective way to do this is through employing specific coaching methods that are tailored to your different recruiter’s level of experience. As a general rule of thumb these fall into directive and non-directive coaching and are based on the well-known skill will coaching matrix.
Your new recruit’s need a more tell approach whereas the more experienced recruiters you have respond better to a consultative style. The positive thing about coaching is that it is a skill and a skill that can be learnt rapidly. With sufficient practice and support you will see results faster than you think.
2. Performance Management
In an ideal world if you have invested in management training for your recruiters then the need to performance manage will be reduced. Performance issues often occur when boundaries are not set or coaching never happened in the first place. Most larger recruitment agencies will have their own performance management system in place that is used as a measure and system to follow. Performance management has a procedural basis and this is something that your recruitment managers will value. There are a number of do’s and don’ts in this arena and your own H.R. department needs to be involved in giving help and advice on the process to use. Often when a recruitment manager takes over a new role there will be performance issues that have not been addressed. So as a priority you must insure that they are able to handle this from day one.
With demands high on everyone in an organisation. The ability to focus on what matters is paramount. This is especially so for recruitment managers. The recruitment sector is different from other industries in that recruitment managers will have their own billings to achieve as well as helping their team hit theirs. Not an easy task unless you have laser focus and are able to identify the tasks that will produce results fast verses the ones that might be easier to do, however they don’t result in the same business gain. This is a challenge for recruitment managers as they have a tendency to do what they have always done. Juggling their own billings and managing a team needs some planning and good time management. Awareness is the key and often having a coaching session to help them identify their skills in specific areas will help.
