Social Media Works… Is It Working For You?

As internet marketers may of us struggle to get a handle on how to effectively market in a social media web 2.0 world. Social media is about building relationships. It is very difficult to sell someone when you haven’t built trust through a relationship.

We all get hit up by over aggressive marketers on social sites. You know, those who welcome you to a site and then start selling you something. We also get friends requests from people who have never contacted us before. With this in mind I did a little research on effective social media marketing methods.

In the dozens of article I reviewed no one suggested that in your face marketing works. Nor did anyone suggest that your first contact be a friend’s request. So I thought I would share some of the wisdom of others on social media marketing.

None of these article suggests that in your face upfront marketing is effective. Social media marketing is an example of what is known as the slow close. None of these article suggests that your first contact should be a sales pitch or a friend’s request. Yet, we see this done all the time.

I hope that this helps!

Thanks,
Boris

If I need to find a pediatric nurse in Dallas, social media cannot do this. Facebook, titter etc....totally useless. I cannot understamd how is is that there is so much koolaid going around. No hiring manager or recruiter is going troll facebook or twitter looking for a pediatric nurse in Dallas. So silly.

You wouldn't and I wouldn't but many people make decision based information on social media sites. The point here is that certain methods work better using social media than others. I read recently were Dell claimed to have made 3 million on Twitter since 2007. They learned the value of coupons in a social media environment.

Social media is more about branding and networking than actually selling. Thanks for your input.

Social media is useful in terms of visibility and branding, however translating the conversation off line is not so easy.

It all comes down to expectations, in which case the hype can leave less experienced social media networkers asking what's it all about Alfie?

David. Ahem.

http://twitter.com/NurseJobSearch (pediatric nurse recruiter)

Took all of three seconds with a basic search. And you want to bet those folks and the dozens of others from that search know other pediatric nurses, some looking for a job?

If you really want a hot candidate pool - pediatric nurses hang out on MySpace - do a profile search and you'll have names.

But you're probably right - it's useless to have names of people who aren't posting their resumes on job boards and who happen to like it when people engage them online. Total waste of time.
