Since the iPhone came out in Australia over a year ago, adoption of the device has been huge. Recruiters love buying fancy things and many of us have an iPhone. How many of us actually use it for work purposes? Below I will give you a run down of 10 applications that I think can help you become more productive at work.
reQall captures tasks and ideas using your voice, automatically organises your information, integrates with your Outlook or Google Calendar, shares reminders with others and provides proactive memory assistance via the revolutionary reQall Memory Jogger. This makes it easy to set reminders for yourself, keep a track of your client visits, what you have promised your candidates you will do, and perhaps even make shortlists on your phone!
Yes the iPhone comes bundled with a weather application but that gets it’s forecasts from US weather providers. This application provides you with frequently updated forecasts, observations, and radar loops from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Marching across the city, overdressed when it’s too hot, or without an umbrella when it starts to rain can be a pain in the ass, right? Avoid all that with a decent weather app for your iPhone.
Stanza is the iPhone’s best e-reader application. Download books from the twelve online bookstores, including free, out of copyright books. However with Stanza, you can also download and save web pages to your phone, for quick, offline access. For this, you also need the Stanza desktop application. Copy and paste the URL into the desktop app, and wirelessly share that with your iPhone. Makes it easy to download the “about us” page from a client’s website to read on the way to your client visit!
Well let’s face it, we’re all on the ‘book, but how many of us have access to it on our work PC’s?
5. Air Sharing
An excellent application that lets you use your iphone as an external disk. However this does not simply store your files, it will also preview most file types to enable you to look at them on your iPhone. View Word Documents, PDFs, images and more all on your phone screen. Use it to take several different CV’s to a client visit, and only show them the one you want. Take a job description to a meeting with a candidate, or store all your learning and help materials on your phone for reference no matter where you are. Air Sharing works using Wi-Fi, enabling you to simply drag and drop your files back and forth.
6. TripView Sydney
A brilliant application that tells you when your next bus, ferry or train departs. Save your routes on the application, and next time you are travelling, tap on the route and it gives you all future departure and arrival times, as well as how many minutes before they leave. Not many agencies are happy about paying for cabs these days, so when taking public transport to your next client visit, this will help you get the timing just right.
Looking for a good place to take your candidate or client for a coffee, or a drink? AroundMe finds your location using the iPhone’s built in GPS, and will calculate the nearest amenities to your location. Banks, ATMs, Bars, Coffee Shops, Gas Stations, Hospitals… the list goes on.
Pretty much like Facebook but ultimately a lot more useful for recruiters. Research who you are about to meet with on LinkedIn, add them to your network on the spot instead of exchanging business cards, and get a head start on searching for candidates on the train back from your client visit.
9. Google Maps
- Built In
Work out how long it takes to get to your client visit, and how to get there. Simple!
10. Voice Memo
- Built In
This is a built in app with the latest version of the iPhone Software, 3.0. How often are your notes from a visit or an interview illegible, or simply don’t make sense to you afterwards? Try recording the meeting. Of course you either have to ask permission, or hide it in your jacket and hope the sound comes through!
