In spite 2 successful Navy recruiting assignments, I knew nothing about the staffing industry. Nonetheless, after retirement I was hired by a small executive search firm.
Seven of us were hired at about the same time and trained together once a week under the tutelage of the firm’s patriarchal president. But it was with our individual account managers that the real training began. They were responsible for helping us to integrate the training into our daily activity.
My boss Wally Stuart was a tough (but not mean) and experienced recruiter, whose blunt manner belied a sensitive and philosophical soul. Although these little gems weren’t written down, I learned them through his 'gentle' prodding.
In retrospect, I now know they are foundation upon which I built my career. Thanks again Wally, it really was fun!
PS. Of the seven of us who started, only 3 remain in the industry. What does that tell you about the challenges we face and Wally’s training?
