How do you test for soft skills like communication?

Scenario:You are in the process of hiring for a role that has a lot of technical skills requirements, however, the team is very collaborative and communicates a lot on how they will work together to achieve a specific result.  Question:What tests can you put together that will illustrate the candidate's soft skills in this area? It's…See More

Hiring communicators is amongst the most important thing you can do

I’ve hired a lot of people in my time. From cashiers and ushers when I managed cinemas, through client service managers when working in digital agencies, through to software engineers, data analysts, and marketing managers when working in software startups. Some of the hires were successful and some less so, but one thing the most successful ones had in common was the ability to communicate. They were capable of talking to their colleagues, or to customers or partners about the needs of our…See More

Working from home: a blessing and a curse

There are huge numbers of studies available which look at the benefits of allowing your work force to have periods of remote working i.e. workers who are able to operate remotely from a central location:91% of people who work at home feel more productive then when they’re in the office (1)50% less resignations when employees are allowed to work from home (2)30% of people accomplish more in less time when they telecommute (3)82% of remote workers report lower stress levels (4)69% less…See More

Do you know what it is that you want before you start recruiting?

You’ve gone to the effort of writing a job description, creating some online adverts or engaging a recruiter to find you someone, but have you really thought through who your business needs? "Of course” I hear you cry. “Why would we bother doing all those things if we didn’t know what we needed to recruit for?” But I hate to break it to you.  There are many businesses who start the process of recruiting, only to change their mind about what they want half way through the process. This year…See More

Ask yourself why someone wants to work for you

Following the recent purchase of my last company I’ve been spending a bit of time talking to other businesses about working with them and it’s been quite surprising how much the businesses have focused on what I can do for them and not what they can do for me.Yes, if you’re looking to hire someone to come and do some work for you, absolutely you need to find out if they can do the job. For me this has included telephone calls, video calls, face-to-face meetings, tests completed by me,…See More

Are some people too good to hire for your business?

Posted on November 10, 2017 at 8:00am 0 Comments

I recently came across a story of a product manager who had come from an agile software startup with ten employees and they were interviewing for new positions and one of the businesses that they had spoken to was a software business with about one hundred employees.
The potential new employer was operating a waterfall delivery approach but making a concerted effort to move to agile, to the point where they had an in-house agile coach to support the business in the…
